Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Reboot Just Got a Devastating Update
Few reboots have carried quite as much emotional weight for fans as Marvel’s long-promised return of one of its most beloved characters. Ever since the project was first unveiled, anticipation for it only grew louder with each passing year, even as the road toward an actual release grew increasingly rocky.
That rocky road has finally reached its conclusion, and not in the way anyone hoped. Justin Claus Harder, the designer behind the film’s official logo, confirmed on Instagram that Marvel’s ‘Blade‘ reboot starring Mahershala Ali has been cancelled, closing the book on a project that had been in development for years.
That confirmation lines up with comments from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself, who addressed the situation directly during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Feige admitted feeling like a gigantic loser and failure over the studio’s inability to get the Ali-led film off the ground, a striking level of candor for an executive rarely willing to speak so bluntly about a cancelled project.
Marvel originally announced the ‘Blade’ reboot back in July of 2019, generating enormous excitement at the time given the character’s history and Ali’s undeniable talent. What followed instead was years of turmoil behind the scenes, including multiple directors and writers cycling in and out of the project without ever reaching production.
Bassam Tariq was originally attached to direct before exiting in September of 2022, just months before shooting was supposed to begin. Yann Demange stepped in afterward, only to depart himself in June of last year, leaving the project without a director for a second time in its troubled development history.
The writing side of the production fared no better, with reports indicating the script cycled through at least five different writers over the years, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour and Michael Starrbury among others. That level of instability eventually led Marvel to quietly remove ‘Blade’ from its release calendar altogether in the fall of last year.
Feige has pointed to Marvel’s broader overexpansion into Disney Plus content as part of what ultimately doomed the project, explaining that spreading resources too thin across streaming made it harder to properly develop films like this one. That admission suggests the cancellation reflects wider structural issues within the studio rather than any specific problem with Ali or the character himself.
Notably, none of the reported difficulties ever stemmed from Ali’s own commitment to the role. The actor has publicly stated his readiness to take on the part whenever the studio was prepared to move forward, making the project’s collapse feel especially frustrating given how eager its star remained throughout the process.
Wesley Snipes did make a surprise return as Blade in 2024’s ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,’ giving fans at least a brief taste of the character back on screen even as the Ali led reboot continued stalling. Feige has spoken positively about that cameo, calling it exciting, though it does little to soften the disappointment of losing the fully developed solo film fans had been anticipating.
What is the best move for Marvel's Blade?
Some reports suggest Ali could still eventually appear as Blade in other corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially through a team-up project rather than a standalone film. Whether that ends up materializing remains to be seen, but for now the character’s solo story appears to be shelved indefinitely.
