The new DC Universe is moving forward with its second major movie, but the early response to ‘Supergirl’ has been a mixed bag. Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the superhero film has now received its first wave of reviews, giving fans a better idea of what critics think about DC Studios’ latest release.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, ‘Supergirl’ takes a different approach from previous versions of the character. Instead of focusing on a traditional superhero origin story, the movie follows Kara as she travels across the galaxy on a dangerous mission filled with revenge, loss, and personal discovery.

The film is based on the popular comic series ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It is produced by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran and is part of the first chapter of the new DC Universe, titled ‘Gods and Monsters’.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Supergirl’ currently holds a 61% Tomatometer score from critics. While some reviewers praised Milly Alcock’s performance and the movie’s visual style, others felt the story did not fully capture the potential of the iconic DC character.

Several reviewers highlighted Alcock as the strongest part of the film. Critics said she brings a fresh energy to Kara Zor-El, making the character feel different from previous versions of Supergirl. Kevin Maher from The Times gave the film a negative review but still praised Alcock’s “swaggering charm and goofy energy,” saying the actress is enjoyable even if the movie around her struggles.

Some critics liked the film’s darker and more grounded approach. Jeffrey Lyles of Lyles’ Movie Files described it as “a bleaker, more grounded and almost more (gasp) Snyder-like take” compared to James Gunn’s ‘Superman’. Others felt this different style helped create a unique version of Kara.

However, a number of reviewers said the story and supporting characters prevented the movie from becoming something special. Jake Coyle of the Associated Press said the film has strong moments but “struggles to match Kara’s punk-rock energy with an equally spirited supporting cast and story.” Matt Donato also felt the movie left audiences wanting more because some ideas were not fully developed.

The action and visual style received some positive attention. Critics praised the movie’s larger universe, impressive visuals, and space adventure elements. Some compared the film’s energy to other big sci-fi adventures, saying it successfully creates a fun cosmic journey.

At the same time, some reviewers felt the movie did not fully capture what makes Supergirl an exciting character. Carlos Aguilar from The Playlist compared Kara’s personality more to Tony Stark than Steve Rogers, suggesting the film gives her attitude and confidence but struggles to build a strong emotional story around her.

Overall, critics agree that Milly Alcock is a major highlight and gives audiences a Supergirl they will want to see again. The main criticism is that the movie’s script, supporting cast, and overall story do not always match the strength of Alcock’s performance. The result is a superhero film with plenty of good moments but one that some reviewers believe falls short of becoming a standout DCU entry.

The movie follows Kara on her 23rd birthday as she travels through space with her dog Krypto. During her journey, she meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, and after a tragic event changes everything, Kara begins a mission driven by anger and a desire for revenge.

The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. With Supergirl expected to play a major role in future DCU projects, the film’s reception could have a big impact on the direction of the franchise.

While the Rotten Tomatoes score shows that critics are divided, many agree that Milly Alcock is a standout part of the movie. As audiences prepare to see the film, the final verdict will depend on whether fans connect with this new version of Kara Zor-El and her place in the growing DC Universe.
