Is ‘Supergirl’ Setting Up Wonder Woman’s DCU Comeback? James Gunn’s Hint Has Fans Talking
The new DC Universe is slowly taking shape, and fans are already looking ahead to what could come after the upcoming Superman and Supergirl projects. A recent social media post from DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn has sparked speculation that the studio’s next major movie could involve Wonder Woman, with some fans wondering if Milly Alcock’s Supergirl could be part of the story.
Gunn recently shared an image on Instagram that many fans believe could be a tease for the future of the DCU. While the post did not officially confirm any project, it quickly led to discussions about potential Ana Nogueira’s upcoming Wonder Woman movie and whether Kara Zor-El could appear alongside the Amazon hero.

Supergirl is already expected to have a bigger role in the new DC Universe. After starring in her own solo film, Milly Alcock’s Kara will return in ‘Man of Tomorrow’, the follow-up to ‘Superman’, continuing her journey alongside David Corenswet’s Clark Kent.
The information about Supergirl’s future came from ‘Supergirl’ executive producer Lars P. Winther, who spoke about the character during the film’s premiere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Winther confirmed that Alcock will appear in ‘Man of Tomorrow’ and teased how the movie will continue Kara’s story.
“Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again,” Winther said.
That comment has made fans believe Kara’s journey could move beyond the Superman side of the DCU and into other corners of the franchise. A possible Wonder Woman crossover would allow DC Studios to connect two major heroes while continuing to expand the universe with new character relationships.
The upcoming ‘Supergirl’ movie is expected to introduce a version of Kara who is very different from previous adaptations. Instead of being only defined by her connection to Superman, the film will focus on her personal struggles, her history with Krypton, and her search for a place in the universe.
The movie is inspired by the comic ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, created by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Matheus Lopes. The story takes Kara away from Earth and places her in a much larger space adventure, showing the emotional differences between her and Superman.
Winther explained that Kara’s connection to Krypton is one of the most important parts of her story because she remembers losing her home planet. Unlike Superman, who was sent away as an infant, Kara experienced Krypton’s destruction while she was older.
“She didn’t leave Krypton when she was a baby like Superman. She left when she was like 12, 13 years old. There’s definitely some emotional stuff here because she’s leaving when she’s close to her parents, and she sees their demise,” Winther explained.
While a Supergirl appearance in Wonder Woman’s next movie has not been confirmed, the idea fits with DC Studios’ current approach of building connections between its heroes. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been focusing on creating a shared universe where characters can appear across different stories while still having their own individual journeys.
‘Supergirl’ director Craig Gillespie previously explained that the film was designed to stand on its own rather than simply act as setup for future projects. “We are treating each of these as their own graphic novel. This is your graphic novel,” Gillespie said.
However, with Kara already confirmed to return after her solo adventure, fans are now looking at every DCU update for clues about where she could appear next. If the rumors turn out to be true, Supergirl joining Wonder Woman’s story could become one of the biggest character team-ups in the new DC Universe.
