Mortal Kombat 3 is still not officially confirmed, but director Simon McQuoid has given fans a new update on the future of the franchise.

Following the success of Mortal Kombat II, many fans have been wondering if another movie is already in development. The sequel helped the franchise reach new highs, earning strong reviews and becoming the highest-grossing entry in the live-action movie series. However, according to McQuoid, the studio is not ready to announce a third film just yet.

In an interview with JoBlo while promoting the home release of Mortal Kombat II, McQuoid explained that the future of Mortal Kombat 3 depends on how the current movie continues performing after its theatrical run.

The director said fans will have to “wait and see” because “the lifecycle of this film needs to totally play out” before Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema can make a final decision about moving forward with another sequel.

McQuoid’s comments suggest that the studio is taking a careful approach before officially approving the next chapter. While Mortal Kombat II performed well in theaters and became a new milestone for the franchise, studios often look at more than just opening weekend numbers when deciding whether a sequel is worth making.

The first Mortal Kombat movie, released in 2021, helped revive the franchise after years away from theaters. Although critics gave the film mixed reviews, it became the best-reviewed live-action adaptation of the video game series at the time. It also became a major success for HBO Max after being released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Box Office Fatality: ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Is Already Heading To Streaming After Disappointing Run

Mortal Kombat II continued that momentum and improved in several areas. The sequel received better reviews than its predecessor and became the first live-action Mortal Kombat movie to earn a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also passed the original 1995 Mortal Kombat film at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-grossing movie in the franchise with more than $129 million globally.

Despite those achievements, the sequel’s box office performance may not be enough by itself to guarantee another movie. Mortal Kombat II reportedly had a larger production budget of around $80 million, meaning the film needs additional revenue from digital sales, physical media and streaming to become more profitable.

The movie recently arrived on digital platforms, and its physical release is expected later this month. Those home entertainment numbers will likely play an important role in Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s decision about Mortal Kombat 3.

Streaming could also be a major factor. Once Mortal Kombat II arrives on HBO Max, the film will have another opportunity to reach viewers who may not have seen it in theaters. Many movies have gained new popularity after moving to streaming platforms, and the strong fan response surrounding the sequel could help its chances.

With San Diego Comic-Con approaching, fans are hoping the studio could reveal more information about the future of the franchise. While there is currently no official greenlight for Mortal Kombat 3, McQuoid’s comments suggest the door is still open.

Should Warner Bros. move forward with Mortal Kombat 3?

For now, the fate of the next tournament remains in the hands of audiences. If Mortal Kombat II continues performing well across digital, physical and streaming releases, another brutal battle may only be a matter of time.
