‘Mortal Kombat II’ Splits Opinions As Audiences React Very Differently From Critics As Rotten Tomatoes Score Drops
Mortal Kombat II is getting very different reactions from critics and audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes data and early viewer reviews.
The film, directed by Simon McQuoid, currently holds a 65% score on the Tomatometer from 134 critic reviews. At the same time, audiences are responding much more positively, with an 89% Popcornmeter score based on more than 1,000 verified ratings.

The movie is a sequel to the 2021 film Mortal Kombat and continues the story of Earthrealm fighters entering a deadly interdimensional tournament. It features a large cast including returning actors like Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada, along with new additions such as Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle.
The film follows Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, as he joins Raiden and Sonya Blade to fight against Outworld’s forces and the emperor Shao Kahn. The story also brings in key characters like Kitana and expands the fantasy world of the franchise.
Critics have described the film as mixed overall, continuing a similar response pattern from the first movie. However, fans are reacting in a much more enthusiastic way.
Audience comments highlight strong enjoyment of the action and fight scenes. One viewer said, “The movie was absolutely amazing! Leagues better than the first one.” Another wrote, “Perfect sequel!!! 10/10.”
Fans also praised the way the film includes elements from the video games. One review said, “Loved the action and how they incorporate elements from the game.” Others pointed out nostalgia and fun, with comments like “Childhood nostalgia throughout the whole film” and “Cheesy but fun loved it.”
Some viewers did note minor issues, especially with pacing and character development. One comment mentioned that the film felt a bit rushed, saying some characters “didn’t develop enough,” but still called it a good movie overall.
The gap between critics and audiences is clearly wide, showing a strong divide in opinion about the film’s quality.
Despite the mixed critical response, audiences appear far more satisfied, with many calling it a big improvement over the first installment.
Mortal Kombat II is currently in theaters and continues to perform strongly with fans, while a third film is already in development.
