Netflix Fans Have Only Days Left to Stream This Sci-Fi Favorite Movie
Netflix subscribers are running out of time to stream one of the most iconic sci-fi movies ever made. The platform is about to lose Starship Troopers on November 1st, the 1997 cult classic directed by Paul Verhoeven.
The film has been a favorite among fans for years, and its removal will surely disappoint those who love its mix of action, satire, and futuristic warfare. The information comes from Netflix’s latest removal schedule.
Starship Troopers is based on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein and was written by Edward Neumeier, who also worked on RoboCop. The story takes place in the 23rd century and follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico as he joins Earth’s military, the United Citizen Federation. Alongside his friends, Rico fights in a brutal interstellar war against giant alien bugs known as the Arachnids.
The movie stars Casper Van Dien as Rico, with Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Neil Patrick Harris, Jake Busey, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside rounding out the cast. Filming began in 1996 and took several months to complete, with much of the movie’s massive budget going toward groundbreaking visual effects.
The blend of practical effects and early CGI helped bring the alien creatures to life in a way that still impresses fans today.
When it first hit theaters in November 1997, Starship Troopers received mixed reactions. Critics at the time accused the movie of promoting fascism and criticized its violent tone. Although it opened strongly at the box office, its performance quickly slowed down. The movie earned around $121 million worldwide, which was considered disappointing given its $100 million production cost.
Despite the early backlash, the film’s reputation has completely changed over the years. Many viewers and critics have come to see it as a clever and biting satire of military propaganda and authoritarianism. Its over-the-top action, political commentary, and dark humor have made it a cult favorite, with fans appreciating the movie in a new light decades later.
Since its release, Starship Troopers has grown into a full franchise. It spawned several sequels, including Hero of the Federation (2004), Marauder (2008), Invasion (2012), and Traitor of Mars (2017). There was even an animated TV series in 1999 and a number of video games and comic book tie-ins.
For fans who haven’t seen it or want to relive the wild ride, now is the time to watch it before it leaves Netflix. Once it’s gone, you’ll have to find another way to stream this sci-fi gem.
