New Captain America Comic Explores Steve Rogers’ Early Days in a Changed World

A brand-new Captain America comic series is coming this July, written by Eisner-nominated Chip Zdarsky (Daredevil) and illustrated by superstar artist Valerio Schiti (Avengers). Marvel fans got their first look at the series’ main cover, created by artist Ben Harvey.

Zdarsky first revealed the new Captain America series in February at Marvel’s ComicsPro event. The story will take fans back to a key moment in Steve Rogers’ history—right after he wakes up from being frozen in ice, but before he joins the Avengers. This period has never been fully explored, and the new series will introduce events that change how the world sees Captain America forever.

The series will start in the past, showing Steve adjusting to a world that has moved on without him. Instead of the clear battle lines of World War II, he now faces conflicts fought in secrecy, where enemies aren’t always easy to recognize.

One major challenge will come from Victor Von Doom, who rises to power in Latveria. Steve must decide how to handle this new kind of warfare—should he play by modern rules, or stick to his old values? His decision in the past will have major consequences for his future.

After this opening storyline, the series will shift to the present day, where Captain America will deal with a new threat connected to his past actions.

Zdarsky shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying:“I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades. I loved writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight (2024), so getting to write the actual Captain America title feels like a dream! We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I think is going to really surprise readers! I’m pretty excited to get this out there in the world, especially with Valerio and Frank’s amazing art!”

Artist Valerio Schiti also spoke about the series, saying:
“Chip’s script is so clever and compelling that I’m sure readers will be dragged with us inside Steve’s heart and soul. He’s a man that became the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that war, and came back to life to do his duty and fight again. That’s a lot of pressure, and if you do the math, he’s only in his late twenties in the era we’re exploring!”
