New Details Reveal Doctor Doom’s Terrifying Magical Arsenal in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
New insider details are fleshing out exactly how dangerous Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and the picture being painted is one of a villain whose power comes from a much darker and more mystical place than most fans might have expected.
The details come from Cosmic Circus insider Alex Perez, who revealed in a recent Q&A that Doom has amassed a large collection of trinkets and items accumulated across his adventures, which is described as a core reason for his immense power even without godlike abilities.
Alongside that cache of artifacts, Doom will also have a small number of witches and individuals capable of performing magic at his side, though it has been clarified that the group is not quite the full coven some earlier reports implied.
A magical book known as the Word of God will also factor into his plans, with Perez having first teased the item back in April by saying, “All I can tell you is to beware the man who carries the Word of God.” In Marvel Comics lore, the Word of God is an ancient spellbook filled with reality-warping incantations, and whoever wields it can reshape existence itself.
What makes all of this especially interesting in the context of the MCU is how it connects to earlier corners of the franchise. Perez noted that the film goes deep into exploring the supernatural and that concepts from ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along,’ including the Darkhold, runes, and the mechanics of how magic is absorbed, are all directly relevant to what Doom does in the film. That thread pulls together some of the most significant magical storytelling Marvel has done on the small screen and funnels it into its biggest cinematic villain to date.
The artifact angle has also been hinted at through promotional material. A high-resolution look at Doom’s armor revealed that his suit features details connected to Shang-Chi’s Ten Rings and Kamala Khan’s bangle, with the Rings described as providing unlimited energy while the bangle channels and stabilizes it, allowing Doom to absorb powers from Nexus beings and shape the multiverse.
Even the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ poster quietly hinted at the magical dimension of his character, with runes hidden at the bottom of the image pointing toward a version of Doom who combines cutting-edge science with mastery of the dark arts. Previous live-action portrayals of Doctor Doom, including Tim Story’s electrical version and Josh Trank’s vaguely telekinetic reboot, barely scratched the surface of what the character is capable of in the comics, making ‘Doomsday’ the first real opportunity to portray his full repertoire on screen.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17 of the following year. If the early details are any guide, Marvel appears to be building a Doctor Doom who is as formidable a sorcerer as he is a scientist, and that combination could make him the most complete villain the MCU has ever produced.
