After Disney bought Lucasfilm, the ‘Star Wars’ canon universe expanded dramatically with new movies (five so far, to be precise) and amazing TV shows arriving exclusively on Disney+. One such show – ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ – was about a fan-favorite character, portrayed by the same actor who played the role two decades ago. The question is, will there be a Season 2 of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’?

  • Article Breakdown:
  • ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 hasn’t been officially announced yet, and although rumors are calling for it to happen, word from Lucasfilm is that ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 is ‘not in active development.’
  • The doors haven’t been closed, though, so it’s possible that it’ll happen in the future.

Will there be ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2?

If you ask Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) or Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker), they’d both love to explore their characters further and do another season of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi.’ They both actually said so at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration event. However, at that very same event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy didn’t share the same sentiment.

In fact, she confirmed for Variety earlier this year that they didn’t really plan, let alone started developing a potential ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2:

“That is not an active development. But I never say never because there’s always the possibility. “That show was so well-received, and Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another. Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now. We’ll turn our attention to that again, maybe, down the road.”

As I’ve mentioned, Deborah Chow was both the director and executive producer of the first season. When Deadline asked her the same question that Variety asked Kennedy a month earlier, Chow explained:

“I’m sure you can tell from the story that it is closed. We did obviously seem to tell one big story. Who knows, there’s ten more years before ‘A New Hope’ starts, so never say never.”

In other words, nothing is currently planned or in development, but should they choose to decide to go for another season, Ewan McGregor will be ready to put on that Jedi robe once again, as he confirmed for GQ more than a year ago:

“I really hope we do another. If I could do one of these every now and again – I’d just be happy about it.”

What could ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 be about?

Now, the possibilities for Season 2 are literally endless – of course, if it ever happens. About a decade of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s self-induced exile on Tatooine remains between the ending of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 1 and ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.’ Wouldn’t it be incredibly interesting to see more about those years of Kenobi’s exile?

It would be silly to have Anakin and Obi-Wan meet again – that would just contradict the original trilogy – but Season 2 could deal with Kenobi’s life on Tatooine. Perhaps he deals with threats on the planet itself. Maybe we see more of him secretly protecting little Luke from the shadows?

Perhaps the show dives more into his psyche – how he dealt with his grief over Anakin’s death, the Jedi Order’s fall, and the Empire’s rise. We could explore how Ben Kenobi managed to hold his values and Jedi ways despite his anger and grief.

That would actually be an insanely powerful message – hope. He secretly cared for Luke on Tatooine, knowing that one day, he may rise and save the galaxy from the Empire. Even when the times were darkest – a new hope was growing.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 potential cast

Naturally, we’d love to see Ewan McGregor return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for Season 2. Personally, I wouldn’t particularly like to see Hayden Christensen’s Anakin/Vader meet Kenobi again in Season 2, but I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing more of him in the aftermath of their last encounter.

Also, Moses Ingram blasted as Reva in the first season of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,’ so I’d love to see her again in that role and Rupert Friend as The Inquisitor. Now, those are the obvious choices, right? But what about, for instance, Joel Edgerton?

You know, there was this long-lasting theory about Edgerton’s character from the prequel trilogy that he was actually Obi-Wan’s long-lost brother from Kenobi’s childhood before he was taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The idea was tossed out of the original screenplay for ‘Episode VI: Return of the Jedi,’ but mentioned in the movie’s novelization.

Long story short, it was never inducted into Star Wars canon, and Owen Lars’ appearances in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 1 (Part I and Part VI) certainly didn’t give off brotherly vibes with Kenobi. Perhaps the showrunners could play with that idea a bit more and how fate put both Kenobi brothers on the path to meet Anakin and care for Luke Skywalker.

It would be a massive long shot and would probably disrupt so many things that are now canon, but I’m allowed to wishfully think as a fan, am I not? Jokes aside, if ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 does happen, we’d likely see more of Owen Lars – brother or no brother to Kenobi.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 potential release date

Now that Season 2 hasn’t even been confirmed yet, it’s hard to tell if and when it could be released. However, we can speculate a bit based on the first season of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and our production information about it.

The series was officially announced in mid-2019, and filming was supposed to start in early 2020. Pre-production started in January 2020, but then COVID-19 happened and halted the entire process. So, we have to start our speculations elsewhere – right when filming actually began.

It began in May 2021 and wrapped in mid-September of the same year, whereas the first two episodes were released in May 2022, exactly a year after filming initially began. Ergo, hadn’t we lost a year to the pandemic, it would have taken about two years between the show’s official announcement and its premiere on Disney+.

This means that if Disney and Lucasfilm go through with ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2 and give us an official announcement in, let’s say, early 2024, we can expect the premiere somewhere around late 2025 to early 2026.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ is available for streaming exclusively on Disney+.
