Out of all of the different Star Wars characters we’ve met, Obi-Wan Kenobi is often regarded as an unsung hero because he doesn’t always get the credit he deserves for the things that he did throughout his lifetime. Of course, his backstory was never explored as much as the backstories of the Skywalkers, but we do know that he was just like all of the other Jedi because he was taken at a very young age. So, what planet is Obi-Wan Kenobi from?

Obi-Wan Kenobi was from a planet called Stewjon. George Lucas coined the name of Obi-Wan’s planet on the spot when comedian and talk-show host Jon Stewart asked him on the spot where Kenobi was from. Lucas originally coined Obi-Wan’s planet from Stewart’s name as a joke before it became canon.

One of the things that George Lucas was known for was his penchant for tuckerization, which is the practice of using the names of real-life people for the names of fictional entities. In that regard, Obi-Wan’s name was tuckerized from Jon Stewart’s name on the spot when Lucas was asked by the comedian on the spot. So, with that said, let’s look at where Obi-Wan Kenobi came from.

Obi-Wan barely remembers his home

Even though he has always been one of the most important Star Wars characters of all time, Obi-Wan Kenobi is somewhat of an unsung hero, and not many fans talk about his massive contribution to the lore. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that he has had one of the biggest impacts on the storyline of Star Wars, even though his background and history weren’t as well-explored as the other characters.

Of course, Kenobi finally saw more of the spotlight in the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ series, which focused on him as the central character. The series takes place ten years after Order 66 as Obi-Wan struggles with his life after the fall of the Jedi because he is suffering from depression. But he was forced into action once more when Bail Organa had no choice but to ask his help to rescue the kidnapped Leia Organa.

Obi-Wan succeeded in rescuing Leia as they tried to find a way back to Alderaan while escaping the Empire and the Inquisitors. During one of the scenes involving Obi-Wan and Leia, the battle-weary Jedi Master told the young Organa that he was taken very young to become a Jedi and could barely remember his family. Specifically, he said:

“As Jedi, we’re taken from our families when we’re very young. I still have glimpses. Flashes, really. My mother’s shawl. My father’s hands. I remember a baby… Yes, I think I had a brother. Really don’t remember him.”

Of course, it is understandable why Obi-Wan barely remembers his past at all, as the Jedi Order took him at the age of three. In that regard, there was never any mention of his home, as there’s a good chance that Kenobi doesn’t even remember where he came from. That’s why it was never mentioned in any of the Star Wars movies and series where Obi-Wan was born.

This highlights the fact that the Jedi Order wasn’t exactly morally sound, as they had to take in children barely old enough to talk. Of course, those children’s families could choose whether they wanted their children to become Jedi. Still, the fact that Obi-Wan was basically born and raised to become a Jedi and was never even able to remember his family at all is one of the reasons why the Jedi Order’s way of doing things wasn’t always the best for the children whose fates were imposed on them.

Where was Obi-Wan born?

Although Obi-Wan Kenobi was raised to become a Jedi in the world of Coruscant, where the Jedi Temple was located, he was still born on a different planet, just like a lot of the different Jedi in the storyline of Star Wars.

In fact, Obi-Wan Kenobi was born on Stewjon, which is a planet located in the Deep Core of the galaxy. However, we have never seen Stewjon in canon as this planet hasn’t been explored by any Star Wars media, including the ones involving Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While Obi-Wan was aware of where he was born, he once told Anakin Skywalker after taking him in as his Padawan that he did not remember leaving his homeworld. This means that he has almost no memories of Stewjon, as he was just three years old when he was taken to Coruscant. Still, he has memories of his family even though he could barely remember his own home planet.

George Lucas created Obi-Wan’s planet on the spot

One of the most interesting things about the Stewjon planet where Obi-Wan Kenobi was born was that it was never mentioned in any movie or series that this was the planet where he was born. Instead, it was something that George Lucas seemingly coined on the spot.

In 2010, Lucas attended the Star Wars Celebration V event held in Orlando, Florida. Comedian and talk-show host Jon Stewart attended one of the events involving George Lucas. In an interview, he asked Lucas where Obi-Wan Kenobi was born.

George Lucas replied that Kenobi was born on the planet Stewjon. This was the first time that this planet was ever mentioned at all. Still, Lucas stuck firm with his decision to say that this was Obi-Wan’s planet. He told the comedian:

“This is one of the first things I wrote in the very first script. He comes from the planet Stewjon.”

But the truth is that the planet’s name was just a tuckerization of Jon Stewart’s own name, as Lucas may have coined the planet’s name on the spot. “Stewjon” is obviously a tuckerization of Jon Stewart’s name. Of course, Lucas was known for the practice of tuckerization, which is the act of using a real-life person’s name as the basis of the name of a fictional entity. And Obi-Wan’s planet was just one of the many tuckerized entities in the fictional lore of Star Wars.
