‘Obsession’ Just Broke Another Box Office Record, And The Numbers Are Getting Genuinely Absurd
Every so often, a movie comes along that completely rewrites what people expect from its genre, and horror fans have been living through exactly that moment for weeks now. What started as a scrappy passion project from a YouTube creator has somehow turned into one of the most talked-about theatrical success stories of the year.
‘Obsession‘ arrived in theaters without the marketing machine or star power that usually fuels a box office phenomenon, yet it has continued to defy every prediction thrown its way. Weekend after weekend, the film has held onto audiences in a way that traditional horror releases almost never manage, and that staying power just hit another major milestone.
The film has now spent 46 consecutive days earning more than one million dollars at the domestic box office, a streak that puts it in rare company alongside ‘Barbie’ as the fifth-longest run of its kind since the pandemic. That number alone surpasses the 45 day streaks previously set by ‘Project Hail Mary’, ‘Wicked’, and ‘Across the Spiderverse’, a genuinely stunning feat for a horror film with no franchise recognition behind it.
Curry Barker, the filmmaker behind the movie, built his following on YouTube long before he ever set foot on a proper film set. That background makes the film’s continued dominance even more remarkable, especially with its most recent nationwide Monday numbers marking the biggest seventh Monday performance any horror film has ever recorded.
The film pulled in roughly 1.5 million dollars on that Monday alone, representing only a 35.9 percent drop from the previous week. It managed that hold while losing just 88 theaters heading into the weekend, keeping its footprint at an impressive 2,965 locations nationwide even this far into its run.
Those numbers have pushed the film’s domestic cume to 235.3 million dollars, a figure that already looked untouchable when it first seemed possible weeks ago. Industry watchers now consider a 250 million dollar domestic total to be all but guaranteed, with some projecting the film could ultimately land anywhere between 250 and 270 million dollars before its theatrical run winds down.
What makes this run so remarkable is just how little money was on the table when it all began. The film was produced for under one million dollars, an almost unheard of budget for a movie now generating this level of theatrical revenue.
Focus Features acquired the global distribution rights for around 15 million dollars, a deal that excluded France, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. Considering where the film’s domestic and international totals now stand, both the producers and the studio are seeing a return on that initial bet that few could have predicted.

Just last week, many industry observers assumed 250 million dollars represented the absolute peak of what this film could achieve domestically. Now that number is increasingly being treated as a floor rather than a ceiling, provided Focus Features continues to manage its theatrical footprint carefully and keeps the film out of digital release for as long as possible.
That strategy has clearly worked in the film’s favor so far, allowing it to keep drawing audiences into theaters rather than waiting for a home viewing option. With the film continuing to hold strong even against new wide releases entering the marketplace, there is little indication its momentum is ready to slow down anytime soon.
For an independent horror film that started as little more than an ambitious idea from a content creator, ‘Obsession’ has become one of the defining box office stories of the year.
