‘Office Romance’ Star Jennifer Lopez (57) and Kate Middleton (44) Wore the Same Shoe, and the Styling Couldn’t Be More Different

Fall dressing has a way of bringing the humble loafer back into the spotlight. After seasons of stilettos and platforms, fashion has been leaning into what Hola called an anti-heel moment, with chunky, comfortable shoes taking over the footwear conversation. Few styles are more versatile than a polished penny loafer.

Kate Middleton has long been a quiet champion of the shoe. She wore Boden’s Nya penny loafers to Castle Hill Academy in February for Children’s Mental Health Week, pairing them with a Petar Petrov jacket and belted chocolate-brown cigarette trousers. The look was a perfect example of how loafers can keep an elevated, business-style outfit comfortable.

Now People has put a surprising pair side by side. In an Oct. 3 piece, the magazine points out that Jennifer Lopez, 57, and Kate Middleton, 44, have opposite styles, yet both rely on this timeless shoe come fall. Lopez wore her loafers in Paris on Sept. 29, just five days after the Princess of Wales wore the same style in lieu of pumps.

Lopez was photographed in Paris during Paris Fashion Week while shopping at Goyard and Stella McCartney. She wore a semi-sheer white slip dress in swirly floral lace, reportedly from Dior, with spaghetti straps, a thigh-high slit and a fully backless design. She paired it with chunky black leather loafers and white crew socks.

The rest of the look was relaxed. Lopez added a small quilted black Lady Dior bag, oversized aviator sunglasses, statement earrings and a pendant necklace, with her hair in a messy bun. It was a deliberate break from the platforms and stilettos she has worn throughout much of Fashion Month.

The outing also made headlines for another reason. Lopez stopped outside her hotel to address a crowd of photographers who followed her, and video of the moment spread quickly online. Fans were divided on the footwear, but the contrast of delicate lace and sturdy leather clearly got people talking.

Kate’s moment came on Sept. 24, when she visited The Forward Trust in Southend-on-Sea to mark Addiction Awareness Week. She wore oxblood Boden Nya penny loafers without socks, with a double-breasted jacquard blazer over a chocolate brown knit top and matching trousers cropped at the ankle. Deep brown tailoring gave the outfit a cohesive, autumn-ready finish.

Unlike Lopez’s, Kate’s pair was a classic penny loafer. The croc-embossed oxblood version has sold out, though Boden sells the $190 style in other shades, with some on sale. Hello! described the choice as an unexpected, preppy swap for the pointed-toe Gianvito Rossi pumps she is best known for.

The two outfits could hardly be more different. One is a backless lace slip with socks, and the other is a tailored blazer and trousers for a charity visit. Yet the shoe worked for both, which is the point People makes about its range.

That versatility is what makes the loafer a smart investment. People’s roundup of lookalike pairs runs from Amazon Essentials Almond-Toe Loafers from $21 to Vince Camuto and Sam Edelman styles at higher price points. There are chunky, cushy options for commuting and sleek ones for dresses or jeans.

For many shoppers, that is the real appeal. A pair of loafers can move from a weekend errand to the office, and from a royal engagement to a Parisian shopping trip. Town & Country even wondered whether 2026 might be the year of the loafer for Kate.

Both women are proof that comfort and polish do not have to compete. Lopez used the loafer to undercut a very feminine dress, while Kate used it to soften a structured suit. Whatever the mood, the shoe adapts.
