‘Ready Player Two’ Isn’t Dead After All – Here’s What We Know About the Long-Awaited Sequel
Franchise sequels have a funny way of lingering in development limbo for years, quietly fading from the conversation until fans simply assume the project has been shelved for good. That’s exactly the fate many assumed had befallen one particular follow-up, a film based on a beloved sequel novel that had gone conspicuously silent since its initial announcement.
That silence has finally been broken, and the update arrives at a moment when fans had all but given up hope of ever seeing this world return to the big screen. What began as a hopeful ending in 2018 has spent years waiting for its next chapter to materialize.
Screenwriter Zak Penn, who wrote the original film, confirmed exclusively to The Direct that he’s currently working on the script for ‘Ready Player Two,’ marking the biggest update on the long-rumored sequel in years. Speaking on the red carpet for ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,’ Penn confirmed the project is still very much alive, telling The Direct, “I am working on it.”
That confirmation puts to rest years of uncertainty surrounding whether Warner Bros. had quietly abandoned plans for the follow-up. The sequel is based on Ernest Cline’s 2020 novel of the same name, continuing the story first told in 2018’s ‘Ready Player One,’ which followed Wade Watts and his friends racing to claim control of the virtual reality world known as the OASIS.
Plans for the sequel first surfaced back in July 2020, with the film originally expected to arrive sometime around 2028. Given that timeline, a 2027 production start remains technically plausible, though no official shooting schedule has been confirmed at this stage.

Steven Spielberg’s involvement in the project has also been a recurring question mark over the years, one that was at least partially resolved back in March 2024. At an industry event, Spielberg confirmed he would serve as a producer on ‘Ready Player Two’ rather than return to the director’s chair, a shift that had left some fans wondering how deeply involved he’d remain in shaping the sequel’s creative direction.
Penn’s continued involvement as writer offers a reassuring throughline for fans hoping the sequel captures the same spirit as the original. Having penned the first film’s screenplay alongside author Ernest Cline, Penn brings established familiarity with the source material and the tone that made the original such a beloved adaptation.
The original ‘Ready Player One’ concluded with Wade sharing ownership of the OASIS with his friends while instituting regular shutdowns to encourage people to reconnect with the real world, an ending that left plenty of narrative doors open for a sequel to explore. ‘Ready Player Two,’ the novel, picks up that story with new stakes and challenges within the digital universe Cline created.
While no casting updates, director attachments, or firm release timelines have been shared alongside this news, Penn’s confirmation that he’s actively writing signals genuine forward momentum on a project that had largely fallen off fans’ radar. For those who fell in love with Wade Watts and the OASIS back in 2018, this update offers the first real sign that their next adventure might actually be coming.
