The rumors that the MCU is rebooting are nothing new. In October of 2023, there was quite a lot of talk regarding the possibility of ‘Secret Wars’ being the breaking point between the new and old MCU.

MCU has been struggling for almost the entirety of 2023. There is an obvious lack of quality when it comes to released content. The things that used to work no longer draw billions in profit. ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’ failed in a big way, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ was a hit but had an underwhelming opening, and Disney+ shows are heavily criticized for their lack of direction, which results in fewer and fewer people interested in the content overall. ‘The Marvels’ only served as the final nail in the coffin as the lowest-grossing movie in the MCU history and the first Marvel Studios movie not to break the $100 million mark in the domestic box office.

The first concrete evidence that the MCU was heading for a reboot came from Joanna Robinsons in her book ‘The Reign of Marvel Studios’ and on the podcast The Watch.

“We have a quote from Kevin Feige sort of implying… that like Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot in which they can prune everything. That’s not to use a Loki-ism. Prune everything that’s not working and just keep what is [working], or bring back people you thought were gone forever.”

Now yesterday, Daniel Richtman, a reputable Twitter influencer and leaker, made claims that MCU will only be soft-rebooted, not fully rebooted. The new heroes will stay but on a new Earth with mutants and Fantastic Four, which are set to be introduced in the next few phases of the MCU.

Marvel’s potential reboot of the MCU is most likely prompted by the acquisition of former Fox Marvel characters, notably the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. The need to consolidate the timeline and the perceived negative state of Marvel content also contributed to this decision. A “soft reboot” would enable Marvel to maintain successful elements, eliminate what isn’t working, and reintroduce major characters like Iron Man, T’Challa, Thanos, Steve Rogers, and others who have been killed off or retired.
