Rumors More R Rated MCU Projects Are on the Way No Matter How ‘Echo and ‘Deadpool 3 Perform

The majority of MCU was, at least until now, either PG-13 or TV-14 rated, meaning that most of the movies and shows produced were family-friendly. This started to change when it was announced that the upcoming ‘Deadpool 3’ sequel would keep its R rating, as it seems impossible to make a PG-13 Deadpool movie without a lot of gore and inappropriate humor.

The next project to be R-rated is ‘Echo,’ releasing in January 2024; the show will be the first to fall under the Marvel Spotlight banner, meaning that it’s going to be character-oriented, and previous knowledge of the MCU is not necessary to watch it. The showrunners also “warned” that Maya’s story won’t be the one of redemption, yes it will have family themes but it’s also going to be very violent, something that can be seen from the trailers as well.

Then, a few weeks after that, ‘Blade’ director Yann Demange confirmed that the upcoming reboot will likewise be R-rated. So what’s happening? Marvel is obviously testing new grounds since it would be an understatement to say that the movies and shows are underperforming this year. This is why the studious is also reportedly considering making ‘Thunderbolts’ r-rated as well. But if there’s one thing we know, major movie studios are taking everything into consideration, and they are always trying to gather as much data as they can about potential products before sending them out in production. So many assumed that Marvel Studios and Disney would see what kind of reception ‘Deadpool 3’ and ‘Echo’ have before they greenlight more R-rated projects.

According to Alex Perez, a reliable scooper and leaker, this isn’t exactly the case, and the future of more R-rated projects does not depend on ‘Echo’ and ‘Deadpool 3.’

So even if ‘Echo’ and ‘Deadpool 3’ flop in a major way, the studio is ready to greenlight another R-rated project but will carefully consider which projects are worth doing it.

In any case, fans will certainly appreciate the change of “scenery” perhaps MCU has gotten a bit stale with the constant flow of new heroes and not enough finished stories; so many projects are being pushed fans don’t have time to focus, and connect with the already existing characters before new one is being introduced. Marvel Spotlight aims to change this a bit, these stand-alone projects will offer character-drive stories and nothing less.
