‘Scooby-Doo’ Live-Action Netflix Series Adds Final Cast Members as Production Heats Up
Netflix has officially completed the main cast for its upcoming live-action series Scooby-Doo: Origins, bringing the beloved Mystery Inc. team and a wide supporting ensemble together as filming moves forward in Atlanta.
The series, which is set to premiere in 2027, reimagines the classic animated franchise as a modern mystery drama. According to the official production update, the show is already in active production and aims to explore a darker and more grounded version of the iconic characters while still keeping the core mystery-solving spirit intact.
The main group of Mystery Inc. has already been announced. Maxwell Jenkins will play Fred Jones, Tanner Hagen takes on Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson will portray Velma Dinkley, and Mckenna Grace is set as Daphne Blake. Paul Walter Hauser is also attached to the project in a role that has not yet been revealed, keeping fans guessing about how he will fit into the story.
Netflix confirmed that a large supporting cast has now been added, rounding out the world around the core group. The expanded cast includes actors such as Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Maxwell Simkins, Jona Xiao, Dani Deetté, Elysée Sanvillé, Alex Isles, Avery Kristen Pohl, Pamela Mitchell, Ross Kimball, Sara Gilbert, Wynn Everett, Sauriyan Sapkota, Bruce McGill, and Sherilyn Fenn. Character details for most of these roles are still being kept secret, suggesting the show will lean heavily into mystery and surprise reveals.
The series logline describes Scooby-Doo: Origins as a new take on the familiar story. It follows Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where they stumble into a disturbing case involving a lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. As the mystery deepens, they team up with Velma, a logical and science-minded local, and Fred, a new kid in town with a strange charm. Together, they get pulled into a dangerous investigation that also brings out hidden secrets from their own pasts.
The story blends coming-of-age drama with supernatural mystery elements, placing the characters in situations that test both their friendships and their judgment. The focus on their younger years suggests the series will explore how Mystery Inc. first formed and how each member developed their unique personality and skills.
Behind the scenes, the series is led by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. They are joined by André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson under the Midnight Radio banner. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman also executive produce through Berlanti Productions. Toby Haynes is attached as executive producer and will direct the first episode. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.
With its cast now fully assembled, Scooby-Doo: Origins is moving into the next stage of production as anticipation builds for its 2027 release.
