Marvel Studios’ next series Secret Invasion is only one month away from its premiere on Disney+. Loosely based on the homonymous comic book storyline, the anticipated miniseries is a follow-up to 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury returns with his Skrull ally, Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, to face the rebel Skrulls that have invaded and infiltrated Earth to walk among humans as their new way of life.

The series will feature a large cast, featuring a lot of returning but also some brand-new actors and characters. Apart from Jackson and Mendelsohn, some of the returning stars are Don Cheadle, Martin Freeman, and Cobie Smulders, who is reprising the role of Maria Hill for the first time since 2019, when she played Maria Hill, impersonated by Talos’ wife, Soren. Unlike Nick Fury, Far From Home didn’t show where the real Maria Hill was all this time, so the last we’ve seen of the real Maria Hill was at Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame.

Cobie Smulders opens up about her role in Secret Invasion!

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cobie Smulders teased a much darker series in tone. Just like every piece of the series’ promotional material, she highlighted that you couldn’t be sure who to trust since, theoretically, everyone in the series could be a Skrull, and there are also good Skrulls and bad Skrulls. Smulders also shared her gratitude for being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade.

“It’s hard to know who to trust. Now, there is a major discovery of the Skrulls. Maria [Hill] has been trying to get Nick Fury back to Earth to help with a multitude of problems, but when the Skrulls become public knowledge, it finally gets his attention. It’s been an absolute dream to play Maria Hill for the last 10 years. She is a fantastic, multi-layered character who has triumphed over some intense moments in Marvel history.

Cobie Smulders gained wide recognition for playing Robin Scherbatsky in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. She debuted as the SHIELD agent Maria Hill in The Avengers in 2012, and she reprised the role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), in which she actually played Soren shapeshifted as Maria Hill. She also reprised the role in the Agents of SHIELD series and the animated series What If…?

Although she was briefly seen at Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame, it’s unknown where Maria Hill was after she was resurrected from the Blip. While Smulders opened up about that question, we expect the upcoming series to provide a more definitive answer.

“The audience is in the dark as to what she has been up to. I’d like to think that she’s been sipping Mai Tais on vacation somewhere after coming back from the Blip, but most likely, she has been working on a mountain of backlogged issues.”

Marvel Studios hasn’t released a single MCU series on Disney+ since the conclusion of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law last October. Some reports have shown that Marvel Studios is reconsidering their release schedule to have more time between each series. Although Secret Invasion was originally announced to premiere in early 2023, it will premiere in one month. After that, we’ll need to wait until October for the second season of Loki.
