According to Seth Rogen, Anne Hathaway left the 2007 comedy Knocked Up before filming began, and the reason was tied to discomfort with a graphic birth sequence that appears in the film’s final cut. Rogen shared the detail during a July 1 episode of The A24 Podcast, where he spoke alongside director and co-star Olivia Wilde, as reported by Us Weekly.

Rogen explained that Hathaway’s concern was linked to a scene involving childbirth imagery, specifically a moment commonly referred to as “crowning.” He said, “Yeah, I mean … it could have been a hundred million things. That was what I remember being told. Crowning is a tough one. She didn’t want the crowning of the baby to be visually representative. Even though it wasn’t going to be hers … It’s obviously not real.”

In the film, the childbirth sequence features Katherine Heigl’s character giving birth, with explicit visuals included in the comedic framing of the scene. Rogen clarified that Hathaway was never expected to personally perform the scene, since the production used separate footage for those shots rather than the actress herself.

He also suggested that creative fit may have played a role in her decision. Rogen said, “She felt that it was not her brand. Part of me also … we had started rehearsing the movie … maybe she was just like, ‘I don’t know if this is for me.’ I don’t know. I will take what she said at face value, which was the crowning.”

Hathaway had reportedly begun early stages of involvement with the project before ultimately stepping away. Rogen noted that rehearsals had already started when she decided the role might not be the right match for her. He did not describe the situation as a conflict, but rather as a difference in comfort level with the material.

The role eventually remained with Katherine Heigl, who starred opposite Seth Rogen in the film. Heigl later discussed her experience in a 2008 Vanity Fair interview, where she expressed criticism of how the film portrayed its characters. She said the female characters were shown in a negative light, adding, “I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women?”

She also described mixed feelings about the production overall, noting that while most of her experience was positive, she struggled with certain aspects of the script and character portrayal.

Despite the behind-the-scenes tensions and differing perspectives, Knocked Up became a major commercial success. According to Variety, the film earned around $219 million worldwide on a production budget of roughly $25 million. It helped solidify director Judd Apatow’s influence in modern comedy and featured a large ensemble cast including Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Jay Baruchel, and Martin Starr.

The film remains one of the defining comedy hits of its era, but Rogen’s recent comments add new context to its production history and the casting changes that happened before filming even began.
