Casting decisions in Hollywood are influenced by many different factors, and actors often talk about how unexpected some of those reasons can be. Things like appearance, height, or even how someone fits visually with another actor can sometimes play a role in whether they get a part or not. These discussions often come up during interviews with experienced performers.

At the same time, actors also open up more about their personal experiences in the industry as their careers progress. Interviews like these give a closer look at what happens behind the scenes, especially when it comes to auditions and casting feedback that the public never sees.

In a past interview reported by The Telegraph, actor James McAvoy spoke about how he has sometimes been turned down for roles because of his height. He explained that this has come up more than once during his career.

McAvoy said, “As a shorter man, I sometimes get told I’m too short for a role.” He also added that even when he does get cast, there can still be comments about his height behind the scenes, saying, “Or even when I get a role, I’m made to feel like, well, of course, we’re going to have to do something about that.”

The actor, who is around 5ft 7in tall, also shared a personal experience involving a former co-star who questioned whether he was believable as a romantic lead. He said, “That was a kick in the nuts.” He went on to describe how uncomfortable that situation became during filming.

McAvoy added that this kind of reaction is not just about height, but also about appearance in general. He said, “Sometimes you’re made to feel like you’re not good-looking enough to get a role.”

McAvoy is widely known for his roles in films such as X-Men: First Class, Atonement, Wanted, Filth, and The Last King of Scotland. Over the years, he has built a strong career across both film and theatre despite the challenges he mentioned in the interview.
