Tom Holland’s latest blockbuster has become the newest major film to be caught up in a growing online piracy problem after a full-length bootleg of Spider-Man: Brand New Day appeared on X and spread across the platform before being removed.

The Sony and Marvel Studios sequel was uploaded to the Elon Musk-owned social media site on Friday morning, with the leaked copy quickly reaching millions of users before it was taken down later that day. Deadline reported that it reached out to Sony for comment regarding the situation.

The leak happened at the same time the film was making headlines for a much more positive reason. Despite the unauthorized upload, Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivered a massive opening day at the box office, with early projections placing its Friday earnings between $167 million and $173 million. If those numbers hold, the film would surpass Avengers: Endgame’s $157.4 million opening day from 2019.

The incident is the latest in a series of high-profile movie leaks appearing on X. Just one week earlier, a high-quality bootleg of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was shared on the platform, reportedly attracting millions of views before being removed. Universal responded to that leak by saying it had “immediately initiated takedown protocols.”

The repeated leaks have raised new concerns among studios about how easily entire movies can be distributed online. Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter and later rebranded the platform as X in 2022, users with X Premium subscriptions have been allowed to upload much longer videos, including files that can last several hours. That feature has created a situation where complete films can potentially be shared directly on the platform.

For major Hollywood releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which are backed by massive production and marketing budgets, these types of leaks represent a serious challenge. Studios typically spend months building anticipation for theatrical releases, and unauthorized copies appearing online can impact both audience behavior and revenue.

However, the timing of the leak does not appear to have slowed the film’s theatrical momentum. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland as Peter Parker, Brand New Day has already generated enormous fan interest following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film’s opening numbers suggest audiences are still turning out in huge numbers to experience the movie on the big screen.

The situation also highlights the ongoing battle between entertainment companies and digital platforms over copyright protection. While studios have long dealt with piracy through traditional websites and file-sharing services, social media platforms have created a new challenge by allowing leaked content to spread instantly to millions of users.

With more major releases arriving each year, the industry will likely continue looking for new ways to prevent full movies from appearing online before or during their theatrical runs. For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains one of the biggest box office stories of the summer, even as Sony and Marvel deal with the unexpected headache of an online leak.
