‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Could Be About to Make Box Office History, and the Number Nobody Expected Keeps Climbing
Tom Holland has spent his entire Spider-Man tenure quietly building toward moments like this, and ‘Brand New Day’ now finds itself on the verge of doing something almost no film in Hollywood history has managed. With release just days away, the film’s box office tracking has kept climbing at a pace that has industry analysts genuinely stunned.
Just a few weeks ago, early projections for the film’s domestic opening weekend sat in a far more modest range of 180 to 190 million dollars, numbers that would already have been considered a strong showing for any Marvel release. Since then, those estimates have surged dramatically as more concrete data rolled in from ticket presales and premium format bookings.
According to the latest reporting, that domestic projection has now reportedly reached as high as 345 million dollars, a figure that would place ‘Brand New Day’ as the second highest domestic opening weekend of all time, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ 357.12 million dollar debut from 2019. Multiple tracking services have echoed similarly aggressive numbers in recent days, with some pegging the range between 260 and 300 million dollars domestically and others suggesting an even higher ceiling remains possible.
What makes that trajectory especially remarkable is that the film is achieving it without a key advantage most blockbusters rely on heavily. ‘Brand New Day’ will not have access to any domestic IMAX screens during its opening weekend, since those premium auditoriums remain committed to Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ through August 14, and the film is similarly locked out of China’s IMAX screens for its first two weeks of release there as well.
Generating projections of this magnitude without any domestic IMAX access is a genuine statement about raw audience demand for this specific character and cast combination. Other premium formats have reportedly stepped in to absorb much of that overflow, with industry insiders noting extremely strong advance interest across other large format screens both domestically and internationally.
That momentum extends well beyond the United States. The film’s global opening weekend projection has climbed as high as 550 million dollars according to recent tracking, a number that would rank among the largest worldwide superhero debuts ever recorded, all while still missing out on IMAX access entirely for its first stretch in theaters.
International markets are already showing similarly staggering early signs. In India specifically, advance bookings have already surpassed five and a half lakh tickets sold for the extended opening weekend, with reports indicating the film is on pace to overtake the combined opening figures previously set by ‘Spider-Man No: Way Home,’ ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ in that market, positioning it behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ domestically in India as well.
For context, ‘No Way Home’ itself once held the record as the second-best domestic opening weekend in history behind ‘Endgame,’ pulling in roughly 260 million dollars back in December 2021 after accumulating around 78 million dollars in presales beforehand. If current tracking holds anywhere close to accurate, ‘Brand New Day’ would not just match that precedent but potentially blow past it entirely.
Do you think Spider-Man: Brand New Day can challenge Avengers: Endgame’s opening weekend record?
With the film’s theatrical release now imminent, all attention remains fixed on whether these historically ambitious projections actually hold once real numbers start coming in. Given how dramatically the estimates have already grown in just a few short weeks, there is a genuine chance this weekend could reshape the record books in ways very few saw coming this early in the process.
‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ swings into theaters on July 31.
