‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Attacking a Box Office Record Even ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Couldn’t Fully Protect

Summer box office weekends rarely feel like genuine historical events anymore, with franchise fatigue and streaming competition chipping away at the kind of communal theater-going moment Hollywood used to take for granted. Every so often, though, a release comes along that makes the entire industry stop and pay attention.

That’s exactly the conversation surrounding Tom Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker this weekend. Between record previews and an opening day that’s already rewriting the history books, industry watchers have spent the past 48 hours recalibrating just how big this moment could actually become.

Now the film is taking aim at something that once looked untouchable: the pure Friday opening-day record. When ‘Avengers: Endgame’ debuted in 2019, the entire industry cleared the runway for it, with almost no major releases hitting theaters for three weeks beforehand and several movies pulled from over 3,000 screens to make room. That coordinated effort helped ‘Endgame’ become the only film in history to cross $97.5 million on a pure Friday, and the only opening weekend ever to top $300 million.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is challenging that dominance without anything close to the same red-carpet treatment. The film has already delivered a record-breaking $167 million to $173 million first day including previews, easily surpassing ‘Endgame’s’ previous first-day record of $157.4 million, and putting the three-day domestic estimate north of $330 million from 4,487 theaters, which would already stand as the second-biggest domestic opening ever behind only ‘Endgame’s’ $357.1 million.

Context makes that achievement even more striking. ‘Endgame’ had the benefit of a nearly empty release calendar and full access to every premium format, including IMAX, PLF, and 3D, with essentially no competition splitting ticket sales. ‘Brand New Day,’ by contrast, only has partial access to premium large format screens since it’s sharing IMAX and PLF space with ‘The Odyssey,’ and it’s competing against several other films still playing on more than 3,000 screens combined.

The overall North American marketplace numbers underscore just how significant this weekend has become. Current estimates suggest the entire domestic box office could land between $407 million and $412 million for the weekend, which would beat the $402 million generated by all films combined during ‘Endgame’s’ original opening weekend back in 2019.

Records are also falling across specific formats. 4DX is on pace for a $4.5 million opening weekend record after posting all-time high previews of $1.3 million, surpassing the previous benchmark set by ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’ ScreenX, the format ‘Brand New Day’ was specifically shot for, is looking at a record $4 million weekend after beating ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ previous preview night mark.

Sony’s own internal projections had been notably more conservative heading into release, forecasting a domestic opening closer to $195 million. That estimate now looks significantly low given how the film has actually performed since hitting theaters, with some industry trackers suggesting the final domestic total could land within striking distance of ‘Endgame’s’ all-time high.

Whether ‘Brand New Day’ actually catches ‘Endgame’ at the very top of the chart or falls just short, the fact that it’s even mounting a serious challenge, without the same clear runway ‘Endgame’ enjoyed, marks a genuinely rare moment for the industry. This weekend looks set to be remembered less for one single blockbuster and more for a full theatrical marketplace firing on all cylinders again.
