‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Making a Final Push to Break ‘Endgame’s’ Historic Opening Record
Spider-Man: Brand New Day came incredibly close to making box office history. Sony and Marvel Studios’ latest Spider-Man movie opened with a massive $355 million in North America, putting it just behind Avengers: Endgame’s record-breaking $357.1 million three-day opening from 2019.
While Endgame still holds the top spot, Brand New Day achieved something almost just as impressive. The film became the biggest opening ever for Sony, easily beating Spider-Man: No Way Home’s previous studio record of $260.1 million.
According to Deadline, the race for the all-time opening record was still alive heading into Sunday. Some industry rivals believed Brand New Day could still pass Endgame after a smaller-than-expected Sunday drop and finish with a $358 million to $360 million opening. The movie’s Saturday performance helped keep that possibility alive, earning $101.5 million, which ranks as the second-biggest Saturday ever behind Endgame’s $109.2 million.
The movie also set a new attendance record. According to EntTelligence, Brand New Day brought in around 24.1 million moviegoers during its opening weekend, beating Spider-Man: No Way Home’s previous post-pandemic record of 20 million admissions. The company also updated earlier reports about the movie’s advance ticket sales, revealing that the film had already collected around $150 million in presales before Thursday previews began.
The success is especially surprising considering how much the movie industry has changed since the pandemic. Streaming has become a major competitor, and many questioned whether audiences would still show up in huge numbers for theatrical releases. Brand New Day proved that a major event movie can still bring people back to theaters.

Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman credited the film’s emotional approach as one of the reasons audiences connected with it. Instead of trying to make the movie bigger than Spider-Man: No Way Home, the filmmakers focused on making it more personal.
Rothman explained the creative thinking behind the sequel, saying, “We all talked about it – Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, and Tom Holland was very involved – it wasn’t possible to go bigger than the last movie, so we said let’s go deeper. Let’s do something different and make a character-driven story in the midst of spectacle.”
Rothman also praised the film’s themes of friendship and connection, saying, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day is fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives, and that is resonate to audiences of all ages and all around the world.”
Producer Amy Pascal also highlighted the importance of Peter Parker’s humanity in the film’s success. She said, “It’s exciting to see such a powerful response to a story that never lost sight of what makes Peter Parker so enduring—his humanity.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared similar thoughts, saying, “This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world.”
The film’s opening also marked career highs for several people involved. It became the biggest opening ever for Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, and director Destin Daniel Cretton, surpassing Cretton’s previous record with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Premium formats played a major role as well. Deadline reported that large-format screenings made up a significant portion of the weekend, with 3D and premium theaters helping drive strong ticket sales. Dolby Cinema had its biggest opening weekend ever in the United States with the movie, while ScreenX and 4DX also posted impressive numbers.
With strong audience turnout, record-breaking attendance, and a chance to challenge Avengers: Endgame’s opening record, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already become one of the biggest theatrical achievements of the decade. Even if Endgame keeps the crown, Spider-Man has once again proven that Peter Parker remains one of the most powerful characters in movie history.
Should Spider-Man: Brand New Day have beaten Avengers: Endgame’s opening weekend record?
