‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Shattered a Marketing Record Sony Held for Years

Sony has never been shy about going big with a ‘Spider-Man’ release, but the promotional rollout behind the studio’s newest webslinging adventure has taken that approach to an entirely different level. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ arrived in theaters backed by one of the most extensive brand partnership pushes Hollywood has ever seen, blanketing everything from fast food chains to smartphone makers in Spidey branding.

The scale of that campaign has become nearly as big a story as the film’s box office performance itself.

That scale comes into focus once you look at the actual numbers behind the marketing blitz. According to reporting from Deadline, the promotional partner campaign for ‘Brand New Day’ reached a worldwide media value of $309 million, officially making it an all-time Hollywood record for this kind of promotional push.

That figure eclipses the previous high mark set by 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ whose campaign was valued at $288 million, meaning Sony topped its own prior record by roughly $21 million. Notably, the $309 million total reflects promotional media value generated through brand partnerships rather than direct studio ad spend, and it does not include any revenue tied to licensing or merchandise, since Disney continues to hold those rights for the franchise separately from Sony.

The sheer number of companies involved helps explain how the campaign reached that figure. A total of 165 brands took part in the promotional push, with four of them, including Little Caesars, Samsung, ASUS, BMW, and Liquid I.V., securing actual product placement moments inside the film itself. Little Caesars and McDonald’s together accounted for the largest share of the campaign’s overall media value, while Samsung and BMW followed as the next biggest contributors.

Several of Sony’s partners were brand new additions to a ‘Spider-Man’ campaign for the first time, including Liquid I.V., Samsung, Takis, and poppi. The film’s digital footprint matched that scale, with Deadline reporting a social media universe reach of 2.86 billion across platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, and Instagram, a number that reportedly surpassed even ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ own social benchmark.

Sony’s EVP of Brand Strategy and Global Partnerships, Jeffrey Godsick, spoke to the thinking behind such a wide-reaching approach. Godsick described the film as being for everybody, spanning viewers from ages 8 to 80, as he told Deadline, adding that a large roster of partners lets the studio speak to many different audiences at once instead of leaning on a single demographic.

That strategy appears to have paid off in a very literal sense. ‘Brand New Day’ went on to open to an estimated $355 million domestically and $927 million worldwide, landing as the second-biggest opening weekend in box office history behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Given that the film also carries a production budget of roughly $225 million, the combined investment in both making and marketing ‘Brand New Day’ underscores just how much confidence Sony and Marvel placed in this comeback.

It’s worth noting that traditional paid television advertising made up a comparatively small slice of that overall marketing push, with estimates from iSpot.tv putting Sony’s national TV ad spend at around $3.6 million, well below the $20 million to $25 million typically seen for big franchise releases. That gap suggests Sony leaned far more heavily on brand partnerships and digital reach than conventional media buys to build the film’s massive promotional footprint.

With numbers like these, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has become as much a case study in modern blockbuster marketing as it is a box office phenomenon. Whether other studios attempt to chase this kind of partnership-driven playbook for their own tentpole releases remains to be seen, but Sony has clearly set a new bar for what a ‘Spider-Man’ campaign can look like.

What do you think about the record-breaking promotional campaign for Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
