‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Shatters ‘Endgame’s’ Box Office Record with Historic Opening
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially made box office history. After final numbers came in, Tom Holland’s latest Marvel adventure has taken the crown for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, beating a record that many believed would stand for years.
According to final Monday actuals, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $360 million from 4,487 theaters across North America during its first three days. That number pushes the film ahead of Avengers: Endgame, which previously held the record with a $357.1 million opening weekend in 2019.
The updated total is even higher than Sony Pictures’ original estimate of $355 million, turning what was already an impressive debut into a historic milestone. The movie is now only the second film ever to open above $350 million domestically, joining Endgame in one of the most exclusive box office clubs in Hollywood history.
The success continues a huge year for Spider-Man. Brand New Day now holds the top four biggest domestic opening weekends ever connected to the character when including previous franchise entries. The list includes Spider-Man: No Way Home with $260.1 million, followed by Avengers: Infinity War at $257.7 million and The Force Awakens at $248 million.
The latest film also completely dominates the Spider-Man franchise rankings. No Way Home previously held the record for the biggest opening weekend for a live-action Spider-Man movie, but Brand New Day has now passed it by a massive margin.
The movie’s record-breaking run started before the weekend even began. Brand New Day set new marks for the biggest Thursday preview performance and the biggest Friday opening day in domestic box office history. It also became Sony Pictures’ biggest launch ever.
Before release, expectations were much lower. Sony had initially predicted a domestic opening around $195 million and a global debut near $465 million. While that would still have been a major success, the final numbers went far beyond what the studio expected.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said the biggest victory was not the records but the audience response. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Rothman explained, “There are many, many, many people going to see the movie. What’s far more important to me, and what is far more significant, is the response. The audience loved the movie. That’s way more important to me than this record or that record.”
Audience reactions have been extremely positive. The film earned an A CinemaScore from opening weekend viewers and currently holds a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have also responded well, with the movie earning a 90% critics score.

The strong performance has also changed plans for premium screenings. IMAX announced that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will now share some screens with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, allowing more fans to experience the superhero film in the large-format theater experience.
The movie stars Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the story follows Peter Parker as he tries to move forward after the events of No Way Home while facing a dangerous new threat.
With a $360 million opening already secured, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has placed itself among the biggest theatrical events ever. The question now is how high the film can climb as its worldwide box office run continues.
