‘Squid Game’ Creator & Stars Say Some Season 3 Fan Theories Are Actually Right

The creators and stars of Squid Game just confirmed that some fan theories about season 3 are actually true, and fans are more excited than ever.
During a new Netflix special, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and stars Lee Jung-jae (Gi-hun) and Lee Byung-hun (In-ho/The Front Man) sat down to read fan theories and talk about what might be real. Season 3, which will be the final season of the hit series, comes out on June 27, 2025.
In the story, Gi-hun is still stuck in the deadly games and is now trying to destroy the whole operation. He doesn’t know that his biggest enemy, the Front Man, has been hiding in plain sight, pretending to be a player during season 2.
One fan guessed that the next season will include games like Monkey Bars, Human Chess, and Yunnori. They based this on drawings on the walls of the dorm room, like in season 1.
Byung-hun read the theory and said: “In season 1, you can find out the games by looking at the walls. Looking at the walls in season 2, I’m guessing they’ll be Monkey Bars, Human Chess, and Yunnori.”
But Hwang shot that idea down: “In season 1, we drew the games on the walls… that was an Easter egg I hid. But I would never do the exact same thing in season 2. Frankly, the drawings on the walls have nothing to do with the games. I don’t reuse devices like that.”
Still, fans are very excited about guessing the games. “Fans are especially enthusiastic about what the games will be,” said Hwang. “How about watching the next season to find out?” added Lee Jung-jae.
Some fans think Gi-hun or In-ho might be the son of Il-nam, the old man who created the games. The theory is based on the fact that all three characters say they are lactose intolerant.
Hwang read the theory aloud: “Young-il is Il-nam’s son. In season 1, Gi-hun mentions that he’s lactose intolerant, and Il-nam says the same. In season 2, Young-il gives his milk to Jun-hee, saying he can’t drink plain milk.”
But Hwang laughed off the theory: “So both Gi-hun and Young-il are his sons? Does that make them brothers?”
Byung-hun added: “I even asked the director when we were shooting because I wasn’t sure. I think he told me that it’s part of the many devices surrounding the Front Man that are designed to provoke people.”
Hwang made it clear: “Two people being lactose intolerant doesn’t always mean they are related. A lot of people are that way.”
This is the most popular fan theory out there, that Gi-hun, who won the game in season 1, will end up becoming the new Front Man just like In-ho.
Here’s what the cast and creator had to say about it. Hwang read the theory aloud: “Player 456 [Gi-hun] will win the game and become the Front Man.” Byung-hun replied: “I’ve heard that a lot too. Even before season 2 was released. I actually know what happens. I won’t tell.”
Lee Jung-jae asked: “Is it human nature to want to be the Front Man once you win the game?” Hwang wondered: “After the second win, he would have about 90 billion won. And that’s tax-free. Would he still really want to be the Front Man?”
Jung-jae added: “Even after winning all that money, is it human nature to seek power, to end up like the Front Man? Why does everyone think that will happen?”
Hwang answered: “In-ho won the game and became the Front Man. So Gi-hun might also be corrupted in the process and follow in In-ho’s footsteps. Maybe that’s what people think will happen.”
By the end of the talk, the team gave fans just one small clue. Byung-hun said: “One of the theories today was half-right and half-wrong.”
Hwang agreed: “Some of them were partially right. Squid Game season 3 will be even more powerful and unpredictable.”
So while the stars didn’t give away any big spoilers, they did say some of the fan theories are on the right track. With the final season just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out the truth.
