‘Star City’ Star Adam Nagaitis Reveals Why Valya Made Her Shocking Escape to Venus
‘Star City’ has taken its alternate history story into dangerous territory as Valya faces the consequences of his biggest mistake yet. After his secret involvement with American espionage is exposed, the cosmonaut is forced into a desperate escape plan that sends him on a mission to Venus.
The decision puts Valya in a difficult position. Instead of facing punishment on Earth, he chooses to join the Venus mission, giving himself a temporary way out while authorities close in on him. But according to actor Adam Nagaitis, Valya’s choice was not made with a clear plan. It was a decision driven by fear and survival.
In an exclusive interview with SYFY Wire, Nagaitis discussed Valya’s mindset after his betrayal is discovered. The actor explained that the character was no longer thinking logically and was simply reacting to the danger around him.
“He’s acting on instinct,” Nagaitis said. “He’s animalistic at that point. His instinct has kicked in.”
The situation becomes even more painful because Valya is not only trying to escape the authorities, he is also dealing with the loss of trust from his wife Tanya, played by Ruby Ashbourne Serkis. After learning about his lies, Tanya does not immediately follow him in his attempt to escape the Soviet system.
For Nagaitis, Valya’s emotional state is just as important as his physical escape. The actor explained that his character understands he may never be able to return to the life he once had. “However it ends, ‘I miss the love of my life and I’m doomed,’” Nagaitis said while describing Valya’s thoughts.
Serkis also shared her view of Tanya’s reaction during the interview with SYFY Wire. She suggested that Valya’s decision was partly understandable because the danger waiting for him on Earth was becoming impossible to ignore. “It’s probably safer up there than it is down here,” Serkis explained.

While the Venus mission creates a dramatic turning point for the series, the idea behind it is connected to real history. ‘Star City’ uses elements from the Soviet space program and explores what could have happened if history had taken a different direction.
The show’s creators have previously looked at real Soviet space efforts when building the world of the series. Co-showrunner Matt Wolpert told SYFY Wire that the Soviet Union’s interest in Venus was not something invented for the show.
“Those Soviet probes sent back the only images we have from the surface of Venus,” Wolpert explained. He added that bringing real historical details into the story gives audiences a chance to discover parts of space history they may not know.
Valya’s journey to Venus also highlights one of the main ideas behind ‘Star City’. The series combines political tension, personal drama, and space exploration while showing how ordinary people are affected by massive historical events.
For Valya, the mission is not about discovery or glory. It is a desperate attempt to survive after his entire world falls apart. Whether Venus offers him safety or simply delays the consequences waiting for him remains one of the biggest questions as the season continues.
Season one of ‘Star City’ and all five seasons of ‘For All Mankind’ are available to stream on Apple TV.
