Since she was introduced as one of the three most important characters of Star Wars, Princess Leia Organa has been a cultural icon and one of the most influential characters of all time. Of course, part and parcel of what made her a unique character was that it was eventually revealed that she was Luke Skywalker’s long-lost sister. But we already knew that they were raised separately from one another. So, who raised Princess Leia, and where was she raised?

The Organa family raised Princess Leia Organa. After her birth, Leia was adopted by Senator Bail and Queen Breha Organa of Alderaan. As such, she was raised her entire life on Alderaan, where she grew up as a princess and as the heir to the roles of her father and mother.

For some people, Leia got the better end of the stick when a royal family raised her, while Luke had to grow up in a desert with his uncle and aunt. But things went well for both of them as they still ended up helping the galaxy together even though they were separated from birth. And Leia, on her part, grew up as a true leader thanks to her upbringing.

Leia was adopted by the Organa family

One of the biggest surprises introduced by ‘Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi’ was the revelation that Leia Organa was, in fact, the sister of Luke Skywalker. That means that she was also the daughter of Anakin Skywalker, who went on to become Darth Vader. And this was a big surprise because fans saw Leia as a princess who could live a life separate from Luke during much of her formative years.

Of course, Leia was introduced as a possible romance plot for Luke until everything changed when she was revealed to be his sister. They worked together to defeat the Empire as a strong brother and sister tandem in the Force. And their history goes back to the time of the prequel trilogy.

In ‘Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith,’ we learned that Padmé Amidala was pregnant with Anakin’s child. Of course, Anakin fell to the dark side and went on to become Darth Vader. This broke Padmé’s heart as she lost the will to live. But before she died of a broken heart, Padmé went on to give birth to twins, who she named Luke and Leia.

But because the allies of Padmé and the Jedi were looking to keep the children safe from the sights of the Empire because they were the children of the Chosen One, they decided to have them raised separately by different families to make sure that the Empire wouldn’t be able to find them. Luke, of course, was raised by Owen and Beru Lars. Owen was his uncle because Shmi Skywalker, Anakin’s mother, married Owen’s father.

To that end, Luke was raised on a moisture farm on Tatooine and was living a pretty simple life away from the Empire’s sights. Nevertheless, he still dreamt of a life outside of Tatooine because he wanted to join the Rebellion, just like his friends did.

On the other hand, Leia was taken in by Senator Bail Organa, who was Padmé’s greatest ally in the Senate. That’s because Bail and his wife, Breha, always wanted to raise a girl. And that makes sense because a monarchy ruled the entire world of Alderaan, and it seemed like Bail and Breha wanted a girl so that they would have someone that would be able to succeed Breha.

After all, Breha was the queen of Alderaan at that time. In that regard, having a girl was always something that she and Bail wanted because this would allow their family to have a successor to Breha’s throne. And they could never conceive a child because Breha was left sterile after an accident during her younger years.

Is Leia from Alderaan or Naboo?

The fact that Leia was taken in by the ruling monarch of Alderaan and the senator of the same planet allowed her to live a very comfortable life while she was young. Of course, Leia grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth but was always raised to be kind, gentle, strong, and independent. That’s because her father wanted her to become a politician who would succeed as the senator of Alderaan. And by the time her mother was ready to abdicate the throne, Leia was supposed to become the next queen of Alderaan.

In that regard, Leia lived her entire life on Alderaan before she became a Rebel. Then again, she also had Naboo blood coursing through her veins because we all know that her real mother, Padmé Amidala, was from Naboo and was once the elected queen of Naboo before she ended up serving the planet as a senator.

So, while Leia may have lived her entire life on Alderaan, she wasn’t Alderaanian in terms of her blood because her mother was from Naboo and her father was from Tatooine. But she never knew any home besides Alderaan, where her parents raised her as a true Alderaanian and Organa.

Of course, Leia knew that she was adopted because she realized this during the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ series, wherein she even asked if Obi-Wan was her real father. As such, she already knew that Bail and Breha were not her true parents. Still, she treated them as her true parents because they treated her like they were their own.

Unfortunately for Leia, she lost her homeworld when she was forced to watch the Empire blowing up Alderaan using the power of the Death Star. As such, Leia saw her entire home getting destroyed in a blink of an eye, as her parents, friends, and allies on Alderaan weren’t even allowed to flee. That’s why Leia was without a homeworld after the destruction of Alderaan.
