Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi movie Disclosure Day is making a strong start at the box office, but another film continues to surprise the industry in an even bigger way.

According to early box office estimates reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Disclosure Day is expected to earn around $44 million during its opening weekend in North America. The film stars Emily Blunt and follows a story about humanity discovering that extraterrestrial life may already be among us.

The movie earned about $19 million on Friday, including preview screenings, giving Spielberg one of the strongest openings of his recent career. If current projections hold, Disclosure Day will become the biggest domestic opening weekend ever for an original film directed by Spielberg.

The legendary filmmaker came up with the story idea himself before handing screenplay duties to longtime collaborator David Koepp, who previously worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park. The film reportedly had a production budget of around $115 million and is expected to finish its first weekend with nearly $94 million worldwide.

Critics have largely responded positively to the movie, praising Spielberg’s direction and the performances from the cast. Audiences have been slightly more divided, giving the film a B CinemaScore. Even so, the opening numbers show there is still strong interest in original science-fiction stories on the big screen.

While Disclosure Day is having a successful debut, the real box office story continues to be Obsession. The horror thriller directed by Curry Barker is showing remarkable staying power nearly five weeks after its release.

The film is expected to earn another $21 million this weekend, which would represent only a small drop from the previous week. What makes this especially impressive is that Obsession has now managed to earn more money during four consecutive weekends than it did during its original opening weekend, which brought in $17.2 million.

That kind of performance is extremely rare in modern cinema. Most movies experience large declines after opening weekend, but Obsession has continued to attract new audiences through strong word-of-mouth and positive reactions from moviegoers.

By the end of the weekend, the film is expected to reach approximately $190 million domestically. The success has already made it one of the biggest horror stories of the year and the highest-grossing movie in the history of its studio, Focus Features, both in North America and globally.

Other films currently in theaters are seeing more traditional results. Paramount’s Scary Movie is expected to take third place during its second weekend with roughly $15 million. Meanwhile, Backrooms, another major hit among younger audiences, is projected to earn around $12 million in its third weekend. The film’s domestic total is expected to climb to roughly $160 million.

Meanwhile, Masters of the Universe continues to struggle at the box office. The fantasy adaptation is expected to bring in just over $9 million during its second weekend, marking a significant drop from its debut.

For now, the battle at theaters is highlighting two very different success stories. Disclosure Day proves that Steven Spielberg remains one of Hollywood’s most reliable directors when it comes to attracting audiences. At the same time, Obsession continues to defy expectations and establish itself as one of the most surprising box office phenomena of 2026.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both films are helping drive a busy summer movie season, but it is Obsession’s incredible staying power that remains the industry’s biggest talking point.
