‘Stranger Things’ Star Reveals Vecna’s Scrapped Death Scene Had a Major Prequel Connection
Jamie Campbell Bower has revealed that Vecna’s final scene in Stranger Things almost included a direct connection to Stranger Things: The First Shadow, but the idea never made it into the finished episode.
Speaking with Collider, the actor shared that he wanted to add a small but emotional moment during Vecna’s death. The scene would have referenced the villain’s past relationship with Joyce Byers, something that was explored in the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
In the series finale, Vecna, whose real name is Henry Creel, meets his end after Eleven wounds him and Joyce finishes him off with an axe. For viewers who only watched the Netflix series, it appeared to be a straightforward ending. However, fans familiar with the prequel play know that Henry and Joyce actually knew each other long before the events of Stranger Things.
According to Bower, learning more about Henry’s past through The First Shadow changed how he viewed the character’s final moments. The actor explained that after seeing the play several times and taking detailed notes, he felt there was an opportunity to show a final glimpse of Henry’s humanity. He recalled thinking about what Vecna might say when Joyce approached him.
“When Joyce steps up, knowing what I know from having spent time in The First Shadow world, seeing it a few times, I couldn’t help but have this moment of, the humanity is having to come through here.”
Bower imagined Henry making one last desperate attempt to reach someone from his past. “I want to say, ‘Stop. Please don’t do this. You remember me. Do you not remember me?’ And it’s a plea for help, of course, at the final moment, after he’s done all these terrible things.”
Even so, the actor admitted that Joyce probably would not have spared him. “Even if he had been able to articulate it, I still think she would have been like, ‘Mmm, nah.’”
The idea was eventually tested during the ADR process, where actors record additional dialogue after filming. Bower revealed that he tried adding a simple line, “Please don’t,” during Vecna’s death scene. However, unlike a similar addition he successfully made in season 4, this attempt did not work and was left out of the final cut.
The connection between Henry and Joyce comes from Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which takes place in 1959. The play shows Henry attending Hawkins High School alongside a younger Joyce and Jim Hopper.

The two characters were not strangers. In fact, Joyce cast Henry in a school production where he played one of the lead roles. Their lives crossed paths before Henry’s dark transformation began to take over his life.
Season 5 included several references to the stage play, giving fans who followed both stories extra details about Henry’s past. Flashbacks and additional scenes helped connect the prequel with the final season. Still, Bower’s proposed dialogue would have been one of the clearest links between the two stories.
The actor was disappointed the moment did not make it into the episode, but he understood why it was removed. The finale ultimately focused on Joyce ending Vecna’s reign of terror without hesitation.
While the scene never happened, Bower’s comments offer an interesting look at how close Stranger Things came to giving its biggest villain a final moment of vulnerability before his death.
