The summer box office battle between DC and Disney has delivered very different results for two major releases. While ‘Toy Story 5’ continues to attract huge crowds and dominate theaters, ‘Supergirl‘ has struggled to find the same level of interest from moviegoers.

The latest DC film arrived with a lot of attention as part of Warner Bros.’ new plans for the franchise. After ‘Superman’ helped build excitement around the updated DC Universe, expectations were high for another major superhero release. However, the response from audiences has been much quieter compared to the strong performance of Pixar’s latest animated sequel.

According to The Wrap, ‘Supergirl’ is currently heading toward a domestic opening of around $38 million and a worldwide debut of approximately $68 million. The movie reportedly carries a production budget of about $170 million, making the opening result a major disappointment for Warner Bros. and DC.

The film has also faced challenges with audience reactions. ‘Supergirl’ currently holds a mixed response from critics and viewers, with Rotten Tomatoes showing a critics score in the high 50 percent range and an audience score in the 70 percent range. The movie’s opening audience was also reported to lean older and more male, which suggests it did not fully connect with the younger female audience many expected to support a Supergirl-led project.

Meanwhile, ‘Toy Story 5’ has continued its impressive theatrical run. The Pixar sequel opened with a massive $160 million domestic debut and $312 million worldwide, becoming one of the biggest openings of the year. The film has maintained strong momentum in its second weekend, pushing closer to the $300 million domestic mark in only 10 days.

The contrast between the two films highlights a bigger challenge facing superhero movies. The audience excitement that once helped almost every major comic book release become a major event has become harder to achieve. Even established franchises now need strong word of mouth and audience connection to stand out in a crowded market.

For DC Studios, the result creates another challenge as it continues building its new cinematic universe. While ‘Superman’ helped create optimism around the franchise, upcoming projects featuring less familiar characters will need to prove that audiences are willing to show up beyond the biggest names.

At the same time, Pixar appears to have found the right formula by returning to one of its most recognizable franchises. ‘Toy Story 5’ has benefited from nostalgia, family audiences, and strong interest in seeing beloved characters like Woody and Buzz return to theaters.

With both films now heading into the rest of their theatrical runs, the big question is whether ‘Supergirl’ can recover through strong holiday numbers or if ‘Toy Story 5’ will continue leaving the competition behind.
