‘Supergirl’ Drops to #3 on Wednesday at Domestic Box Office as Momentum Slows
According to box office figures, Supergirl is facing a difficult run in theaters after dropping to the #3 spot on its first Wednesday. The film earned just $2.1 million domestically that day, signaling a sharp slowdown in audience turnout.
The DC superhero movie has now reached $44.4 million in the United States and Canada, along with $29.9 million from international markets. That brings its global total to $74.3 million so far. These numbers come from box office reporting sources tracking daily and cumulative earnings.
Industry tracking also suggests the film is heading for a steep drop of around 70% in domestic performance over its upcoming weekend. That kind of decline usually signals weak word-of-mouth and fading audience interest after the opening stretch.
Supergirl is reported to have been produced on a budget between $170 million and $186 million, not including marketing costs. Based on industry estimates, the film would need around $315 million worldwide just to break even. At its current pace, it is falling well short of that target.
When it first opened, expectations were significantly higher. Early projections placed its opening weekend between $40 million and $55 million across more than 3,600 theaters. The film ended up earning about $38 million domestically instead. It also brought in $7.8 million from Thursday previews and $13 million on its first full day.
Globally, the opening weekend reached around $68 million, which was lower than expected for a major superhero release. Some comparisons have even pointed out that it opened below the Marvel film The Marvels from 2023, which had also underperformed at the box office.
Following its debut, analysts reportedly projected that Supergirl could result in losses between $85 million and $125 million for the studio, depending on its final theatrical run and later revenue streams.
The film itself is based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. It is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. The movie is the second entry in the new DC Universe under DC Studios leadership from James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Milly Alcock stars in the title role, alongside actors including Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. In the story, Kara Zor-El travels across space on a violent mission of revenge, marking a darker take on the character than previous adaptations.
The film’s development began after DC Studios reshaped its slate under Gunn and Safran. It was announced in 2023 as part of a new rebooted universe, with the story inspired by the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Supergirl premiered in Brooklyn on June 22, and was released in theaters across the United States on June 26 by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Despite its high-profile release, early critical reception has been mixed, and box office performance continues to trend below expectations.
