Supergirl is off to a strong start at the box office, and early ticket sales suggest the upcoming DC movie could become one of the biggest female-led superhero releases of the post-pandemic era.

According to early box office reports and industry tracking, ticket pre-sales for Supergirl have exceeded many expectations. The film, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, officially began selling tickets this week, and the first numbers have given DC fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Reports indicate that Supergirl’s first two days of pre-sales are running well ahead of several recent superhero movies. The film is reportedly performing around 2.5 times better than The Marvels during the same stage of sales. It is also tracking close to Black Widow and slightly ahead of Thunderbolts, two major comic book releases that opened to solid numbers.

The strong early response has sparked discussion about whether Supergirl can reverse the recent struggles faced by female-led superhero films at the box office. While it is still too early to predict final results, the movie has clearly captured attention much faster than many analysts expected.

Industry tracking shared by Deadline suggests the movie is currently aiming for an opening weekend of more than $55 million when it arrives in theaters on June 26. Those projections could still rise as marketing ramps up and more audiences become aware of the film.

Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie and is based on the popular comic book storyline Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The film stars House of the Dragon breakout actress Milly Alcock in the title role. It will also introduce Jason Momoa as the fan-favorite antihero Lobo, a character many DC fans have wanted to see on the big screen for years.

The movie arrives less than a year after Superman helped launch a new era for DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Superman opened to $125 million domestically and went on to earn more than $618 million worldwide, giving the studio a major win.

While Supergirl is not expected to match Superman’s opening weekend, early comparisons remain encouraging. Some reports suggest its pre-sales are already ahead of Black Adam at the same stage, which could put the film in the range of a $70 million opening if positive momentum continues.

The movie is also expected to easily become the biggest opening weekend ever for a film centered on Supergirl. Previous appearances of the character have never reached these kinds of box office numbers, making the new movie an important test for DC’s growing cinematic universe.

Of course, pre-sales are only part of the story. Strong reviews, audience reactions, and continued marketing will play a huge role in determining how high the film can fly once it reaches theaters.

For now, though, Supergirl appears to be building serious momentum. With several weeks still left before release, DC may have another major summer hit on its hands. If interest continues to grow, Kara Zor-El could soon prove that audiences are more than ready to follow her into the skies.
