The 10 Most-Watched Movie Trailers on YouTube Just Crowned a Surprise Champion
View counts have become one of Hollywood’s favorite hype barometers. A trailer that racks up tens of millions of YouTube plays can signal curiosity, but it does not always translate into ticket sales. The latest ranking of the most-viewed movie trailers on YouTube this year is a good reminder of that gap.
Few titles on it come with a bigger question mark than the one sitting at the top. Laika, the stop-motion studio behind ‘Coraline’, ‘ParaNorman’, ‘The Boxtrolls’, ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ and ‘Missing Link’, has long been admired more than it has been a box office force. Its newest film is the studio’s sixth feature, and it carries an ambition to match.
That film is ‘Wildwood‘, and it holds the top 2 spots on the list. Its official teaser trailer leads with 91 million views, and its official trailer follows with 89 million. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ takes third place with its official trailer at 81 million, ahead of both ‘The Odyssey’ entries.

The rest of the ranking is a mix of franchise heavyweights and surprises:
- ‘The Odyssey’ official trailer takes fourth place with 62 million views, and its new trailer is fifth with 52 million.
- ‘Primetime‘ comes in sixth with 50 million, just ahead of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Special Look, which also has 50 million.
- ‘Backrooms‘ is eighth with 49 million views, and ‘Reminders of Him’ is ninth with 48 million.
- The new trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ closes out the list in tenth with 45 million.

The teaser landed on May 13, and it took off fast. A day later, the trailer reportedly passed 100 million views across platforms, including more than 70 million on YouTube alone, making it one of the biggest animated trailer launches ever. The 91 million figure on this list shows the audience kept growing.

The film itself is directed by Travis Knight from a script by Chris Butler, based on the novel by Colin Meloy. The voice cast includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jacob Tremblay and Richard E. Grant. It follows Prue McKeel, who enters a hidden, enchanted forest to rescue her baby brother after he is taken by a murder of crows.

The YouTube list tells only part of the Marvel story. The first ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer drew 503 million views across platforms in 24 hours, making it Disney’s most-viewed trailer ever and the second-biggest launch behind ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which reportedly pulled in 719 million. Disney’s marketing also spreads views across Instagram, TikTok and other channels, which a YouTube-only ranking cannot capture.

That context also explains the Spider-Man entry sitting last on the list. The figure shown is for its “New Trailer”, not the record-setting first launch. Meanwhile, the ‘Doomsday’ Special Look reached 50 million views, and the film has plenty of other teasers still counting.

The trailer win has not erased ‘Wildwood’s commercial risk. The film opened in North America through Fathom Entertainment on October 23, and tracking projected a domestic opening somewhere between $5 million and $15 million against an estimated $100 million budget. It also faced ‘Clayface’, which was favored to win the weekend with an opening between $20 million and $29 million.

Critics, however, have been rapturous. The film debuted with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from its first 16 reviews after its BFI London Film Festival premiere. It is also Laika’s first PG-13 film and, at 131 minutes, the longest stop-motion feature by runtime, which could limit family appeal.
Strong reviews and a huge trailer audience could still help the film build word of mouth. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’ are both set to open on December 18, so ‘Wildwood’ will need momentum before the holiday giants arrive.
