Sequels to major superhero tentpoles rarely arrive on schedule anymore, and ‘The Batman’ franchise has become something of a case study in that reality. Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight has been waiting in the wings for years while Warner Bros. shuffled its release calendar again and again, testing the patience of fans who have been counting down since the original film’s 2022 debut.

That patience just got tested one more time. ‘The Batman Part II‘ is moving from its October 1, 2027 date to February 18, 2028, marking the third time the sequel’s release has shifted. The gap between the first and second films will now stretch to nearly six years by the time audiences finally see it.

News of the delay came directly from director Matt Reeves himself, who broke the update on social media rather than leaving it to a traditional press release. Reeves shared a first look at Pattinson suited back up as the Dark Knight for ‘The Batman Part II’ alongside the new date reveal. According to Dark Horizons, the brief teaser opens in black before Pattinson’s Batman comes slowly into focus standing under falling snow, cutting to the title card and then the new release date.

There is a silver lining buried in the scheduling shuffle. The new February slot lands on the four day Presidents Day holiday weekend, a frame that has historically been kind to superhero films like ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania,’ and ‘Captain America Brave New World’. The shift was triggered by J.J. Abrams’ ‘The Great Beyond,’ starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, moving into the October 2027 date that ‘The Batman Part II’ previously held.

Production had already been a long time coming. Reeves has been working on the script since late 2022, with production initially expected to begin in 2024, then 2025, before finally getting underway this year. Filming is now taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with additional shoots in London and Liverpool.

The cast list has grown considerably since the first film. Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Barry Keoghan, Jeffrey Wright, and Colin Farrell are all set to return, joined by newcomers Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch. Reeves has also swapped cinematographers, moving from the original’s Greig Fraser to Erik Messerschmidt for the follow-up.

Reaction from fans has been predictably mixed. One fan wrote online, “I love Matt Reeves. I think this movie is gonna bang, but I have serious doubts we’re gonna see this trilogy through to completion,” while another argued the wait has already gone on too long. Others, though, seemed willing to give Reeves the extra runway, with one enthusiastic fan urging him to “take those extra months and deliver gold”.

Between a snowy first look and a villain roster still shrouded in speculation, ‘The Batman Part II’ is shaping up to be worth the wait, so is this delay one you’re willing to forgive, or has Gotham kept you waiting long enough already?
