‘The Big Bang Theory’ Star Makes Surprise ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Cameo — And He’s Barely Recognizable

Spinoffs built around beloved sitcom universes always carry a certain risk, especially when longtime fans show up hoping for familiar faces rather than an entirely new cast of characters. That gamble paid off in a big way this week, though not quite in the manner most viewers expected.

That surprise arrived courtesy of Kunal Nayyar, who made a genuinely startling return appearance in HBO Max’s new ‘Big Bang Theory’ spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.’ Reprising his role as Rajesh Koothrappali roughly twelve minutes into the premiere episode, Nayyar showed up looking dramatically different, sporting long hair, a full mustache, and a rugged beard that left fans doing a double-take.

This particular version of Raj is not technically the same character longtime viewers remember from the original series, but rather an alternate-universe counterpart the show’s protagonists encounter during their multiverse-spanning journey. Stuart Bloom, played once again by Kevin Sussman, teams up with his ex-girlfriend Denise and geologist Bert Kibbler as they search across parallel realities for a way to undo an accidental apocalypse.

That search eventually leads the group to a post apocalyptic version of Caltech, where they are captured by an alternate version of Barry Kripke, played by John Ross Bowie. It is there, imprisoned in the geology lab, that they encounter Nayyar’s transformed take on Raj, nearly unrecognizable after years of captivity but still carrying the same quick wit and charm fans remember, now paired with a noticeably more paranoid outlook.

Costar Lauren Lapkus specifically highlighted Nayyar’s debut as one of her favorite moments from the new series. She told People that his first appearance is funny, fun and so different from the original show, adding that audiences will love seeing just how much has changed within this alternate version of the character.

Lapkus also spoke more broadly about how different the entire spinoff feels compared to its predecessor. She explained that fans will likely be surprised by how completely different the vibe and type of show is, while still expecting the same style of humor that made the original series so beloved to carry through into this new format.

Brian Posehn, who reprises his role as Bert Kibbler, echoed that sentiment while teasing more familiar faces still to come throughout the season. He told Entertainment Tonight that some favorite characters from the original show will continue appearing, though reshaped by whichever alternate universe the group happens to land in during any given episode.

Nayyar’s dramatic new look also carries a bit of personal history behind it. During a previous appearance on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, he revealed he was never a fan of Raj’s original wardrobe, describing the character’s signature style as ridiculously hideous and joking that he could never wear vintage-looking sweaters like that in real-life fashion.

That alternate universe version of Raj also breaks from another long-running pattern established during the original series, having apparently found romantic happiness at some point before the story’s events. Audiences learn he once had a wedding where he arrived on an elephant, though that happiness proved short-lived once his wife was killed by a giant moth shortly afterward, a darkly comedic twist that fits the show’s willingness to undercut sweet moments almost immediately.

With ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ continuing its weekly rollout and more legacy cameos already teased for upcoming episodes, Nayyar’s surprising transformation looks like just the first of several familiar faces fans can expect to encounter throughout the season.
