The Duffer Brothers are finally sharing some new details about the future of the Stranger Things universe. During a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast in Los Angeles, Matt and Ross Duffer spoke with host Josh Horowitz about what fans can expect after the ending of the hit Netflix series.

One of the biggest topics was the long-awaited live-action spin-off. Fans have been guessing for years about what direction the new series could take, but the Duffers made it clear that the project will not focus on Eleven, Mike, Dustin, or the original Hawkins group.

“It’s very early… but it’s definitely, it’s totally new characters, totally different,” the brothers said during the interview.

They also shut down rumors that the spin-off would work like an anthology series similar to Black Mirror. According to the Duffers, the new project will follow one main group of characters instead of telling separate stories every season.

“It’s not an anthology show. It’s a set group of characters,” they explained.

The creators also said they are taking their time with the spin-off because they do not want to rush production just to continue the franchise. The brothers said quality is the most important thing for them and for Netflix.

“We’re being very careful. We don’t want to rush it. We don’t want it to be anything but excellent.”

They continued by saying, “No one wants to make it just to make it. No one wants to just do it to continue Stranger Things. Like, it has to be awesome or forget it.”

The interview also addressed fan theories about a possible next-generation sequel. After the final season ended with Holly Wheeler playing with younger kids in a basement, many viewers thought the show was teasing a new version of Stranger Things with younger characters.

The Duffers said that was never the plan. “That was really about sort of the passing the torch and him remembering back to his childhood and saying goodbye to it. It’s obviously not setting anything up for a sequel.”

They joked that bringing Holly into a new supernatural story would simply lead back to the same characters again.

“If Holly starts to see this weird stuff, she’s gonna call her brother, and then it’s like we’re just making Stranger Things again.”

The brothers also revealed that they are currently focused on writing a brand-new original movie for Paramount Pictures. They said the film has become their main priority right now, although they are still developing the Stranger Things spin-off at the same time.

According to the Duffers, working on a movie feels very different after spending years making long-form television.

“We’re so used to having this massive canvas… being able to tell a story over eight to ten hours.”

They added, “It’s really fun to kind of reteach our brains how to tell a story in this much more contained period of time.”

Even though the spin-off is still in early development, the interview made one thing very clear, the Stranger Things universe is far from over. Along with the new live-action project, Netflix is also continuing with season two of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 and planning a special celebration for the show’s 10th anniversary later this year.
