‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Finally Sets Its Disney+ Streaming Date, and the Timeline Is Telling
Star Wars fans have been counting down the days since a certain green-eared bounty hunting duo left theaters, wondering exactly when they’d get to revisit the galaxy far, far away from their couch. That wait now officially has an end date.
The film marked a genuinely significant moment for the franchise, bringing Star Wars back to the big screen for the first time in seven years after 2019’s ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ Directed by Jon Favreau, it picked up the story of bounty hunter Din Djarin and his tiny green companion following the events of the original Disney+ series that started it all.
Disney has now confirmed that ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu‘ will begin streaming on Disney+ starting September 2, landing on the platform exactly 103 days after its theatrical debut on May 22. That fast turnaround comes as no coincidence, given how the film performed once it hit theaters.
The film ultimately grossed $345.2 million worldwide, a number that made it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie to date, falling short of even 2018’s ‘Solo,’ which brought in $393 million. Disney has openly acknowledged that the film underperformed relative to expectations for a mainline Star Wars theatrical release.
That underwhelming box office run appears to have accelerated the film’s path home. ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ had already made its digital and premium video-on-demand debut back in July, arriving on platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home just weeks after leaving theaters, before instantly topping Blu-ray sales charts.
Despite the softer box office numbers, audience reception has told a different story. The film currently holds an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a considerably cooler 60% from critics, suggesting the theatrical stumble may have had more to do with counterprogramming and franchise fatigue than any real dissatisfaction from the people who actually watched it.
The story follows Din Djarin, once again played by Pedro Pascal, as he and Grogu are recruited by Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, to assist the New Republic. Their mission centers on rescuing Rotta the Hutt, heir to Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire, voiced by “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White, all while tracking down a remaining Imperial leader.
The film also features a memorable cameo from Martin Scorsese as a fry cook named Hugo Durant, marking his second appearance in the Star Wars universe after a similarly brief role in 2018’s ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story.’ It’s a small but fitting callback for longtime fans who remember his earlier cameo.
Once it lands on Disney+, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is expected to quickly become one of the platform’s most-streamed titles, given that ‘The Mandalorian’ remains widely regarded as Disney+’s flagship series. No sequel plans have been confirmed yet, and it remains unclear whether streaming performance could influence a potential return for either a sequel film or a fourth season of the original show.
Looking further ahead, the next Star Wars theatrical release on the calendar is ‘Starfighter,’ starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, set to open in May 2027. For now, though, fans finally have a firm date to circle for Din Djarin and Grogu’s next chapter, even if it’s arriving on a smaller screen than originally planned.
