‘The Marvels’: Which Universe Did Monica Rambeau End Up In? Is It Earth-838?
We know that the ending of ‘The Marvels’ allowed us to see Monica Rambeau sacrificing herself for the greater good when she entered a dimensional hole to close it from the other side as she was left stranded there. Meanwhile, the post-credit scene showed Monica waking up in another universe where her mother was still alive and the X-Men existed. So, which universe did Monica Rambeau end up in, and is it Earth-838?
Maria Rambeau is Captain Marvel in this universe
It goes without saying that Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel in the MCU and that she has been Captain Marvel for around three decades already. We know that she became Captain Marvel due to an accident involving the Light-Speed Engine as she won a race between her and Maria Rambeau during the 80s. However, it is possible that Maria could have been the one exposed to the Light-Speed Engine’s explosion if she had beaten Carol in that race.
In ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ we saw how Maria was introduced as Captain Marvel when Strange was taken to the Illuminati, which was a collection of the different superhero leaders of that universe. This universe was Earth-838, which is parallel to Earth-616 but was different yet very similar to the universe that we all know.
Meanwhile, in the post-credit scene of ‘The Marvels,’ we saw that Monica Rambeau woke up in a different universe. Earlier, she sacrificed herself by absorbing the powers of Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel so that she could close a dimensional portal that was too dangerous to leave alone. However, she needed to close the hole from the other side, as she was left stuck in that universe after closing it.
She woke up on a bed that was next to the bed of Maria Rambeau. Monica was incredibly happy to see Maria, whom she called her mother. But Maria was incredibly confused because she didn’t know who Monica was. It was also revealed that this version of Maria was the Captain Marvel of that universe.
It makes sense that Maria didn’t know who Monica was because her life as Captain Marvel of that universe would have prevented her from having a family, as Carol Danvers herself never had a family of her own on Earth-616. As such, Monica likely doesn’t exist in this universe.
Scarlet Witch supposedly killed Maria in Earth-838
Of course, after fans saw that the Captain Marvel of the universe where Monica ended up was Maria, they concluded that this universe could be Earth-838, which is the same universe where Doctor Strange met the Illuminati during the events of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ After all, it is likely that most universes in the multiverse have Carol instead of Maria as Captain Marvel.
But it is worth mentioning that the leadership of Earth-838 was annihilated by Scarlet Witch in ‘Multiverse of Madness.’ She used the Darkhold to inhabit the body of the Wanda Maximoff of Earth-838 so that she could get to America Chavez, who was in the custody of the Illuminati at that time. Wanda invaded the Illuminati base and killed almost all of the leaders, including Captain Marvel herself.
The fact that Maria Rambeau was killed by the Scarlet Witch on Earth-838 makes it hard to imagine that the universe Monica ended up in could be Earth-838. Of course, we saw that Scarlet Witch crushed Rambeau under a huge statue. But it wasn’t confirmed whether or not she actually died, as it is possible that she could’ve survived because it would take more than a statue to kill Captain Marvel.
This could explain why Maria was lying on a bed and was seemingly getting treatments from Beast during the post-credit scene of ‘The Marvels.’ She also had scars that seemed to indicate that she had suffered wounds from a previous battle. So, in that regard, it is likely that Monica did indeed end up in Earth-838.
We know that the future events of the MCU will allow us to see different universes converging so that the Mutants and the Fantastic Four would end up in the same universe as the Avengers. We also found out in ‘Multiverse of Madness’ that an Incursion between two universes was about to happen, and that means that two universes are about to clash with and destroy one another. It is likely that Clea was referring to Earth-616 and Earth-838 as the universes that were set to clash in the Incursion.
This makes it even more likely that Monica ended up in Earth-838, which is also a universe that serves as home to the Mutants. But the thing is that we also know that the Fantastic Four is set to join the MCU in the future.
During the events of ‘Multiverse of Madness,’ Scarlet Witch also killed Mister Fantastic. Unlike Maria’s death, Mister Fantastic’s death was seemingly more obvious as Wanda tore him to shreds.
So, if Monica ended up in Earth-838, the question of how Mister Fantastic survived needs to be addressed if the Mutans and the Fantastic Four are set to join the MCU.
The possibility of more than two universes colliding
Another possibility that exists is that Monica did indeed find herself in Earth-838, wherein Maria could have been recovering from the wounds she suffered in the battle against Scarlet Witch. But it is also likely that Earth-838 won’t be the only universe that’s going to collide with Earth-616, especially if Mister Fantastic did indeed die in ‘Multiverse of Madness.’
We know that a Fantastic Four film will be coming out in the future, and it is likely that this movie will be set in a universe that’s entirely different from Earth-616 and Earth-838. So, if that’s the case, then there’s a good chance that there will be more than one universe that’s going to collide with Earth-616, and this could involve Earth-838 and the universe of the Fantastic Four.
In ‘Multiverse of Madness,’ it was explained that an Incursion occurs when someone from a different universe affects the events of another universe. So, if that’s the case, Monica’s presence in the universe she got stranded in could be the catalyst for the Incursion that’s going to happen in the future. And that’s something that we are going to find out in the upcoming big-event movies in Marvel Studios’ slate.
