‘The Odyssey’ Just Delivered Another Box Office Gut Punch To The Rest Of The Weekly Chart

Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic has spent its first full week in theaters rewriting expectations for what an original, non-franchise blockbuster can actually do at the domestic box office. After a historic opening weekend, the question quickly became whether that momentum would hold once the weekday slowdown set in, and the film has kept answering that question emphatically.

Early estimates pointed to ‘The Odyssey’ opening with $124.5 million domestically over its first three days, though final studio numbers adjusted that total slightly down to $123.5 million once Monday’s figures were tallied, a result that made it the third highest opening of 2026 behind only Disney and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ and Illumination’s ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’.

According to the latest daily tracking, ‘The Odyssey’ pulled in an estimated $21.2 million on its most recent reported day, continuing to tower over everything else in theaters. Disney’s beleaguered live-action ‘Moana’ remake landed a distant second with $4.1 million, while Universal’s ‘Minions & Monsters’ and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’ rounded out the middle of the chart with $3.4 million and $3.1 million, and horror sequel ‘Evil Dead Burn’ closed out the top five with under $1 million.

That kind of gap between first and second place has defined the film’s run so far. On Monday, “The Odyssey” pulled in $18.67 million at the box office, the best Monday result of the year so far, coming in slightly ahead of the $17.3 million that “Toy Story 5” did on its first Monday, around 50% ahead of the $12.67 million that Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” had on its first Monday. Among all Nolan movies on a Monday, The Odyssey ranks third behind The Dark Knight ($24.4M, July 21, 2008) and The Dark Knight Rises ($19.3M, July 23, 2012).

Through Monday, The Odyssey has earned $142.1 million domestically and $140 million internationally for a running worldwide box office tally of $282.1 million, against its $250 million production budget. While its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score has slightly eroded from a near-perfect start, it still stands at a stellar 94% fresh, tying for Nolan’s highest-rated film. Audiences have given it an even higher 97% fresh score, a new record for the acclaimed director.

Meanwhile, the rest of the chart tells a much rockier story. Since Moana was so expensive, carrying a $250 million price tag, and theater owners get to keep roughly half of revenues, the film is primed to lose at least $100 million in its theatrical run. ‘Toy Story 5’, on the other hand, remains one of the summer’s biggest success stories. Toy Story 5 has grossed $430.9 million domestically, and its worldwide gross of $958.4 million is sure to cross the billion-dollar mark before its run is over.

With no major new wide releases arriving to challenge it, ‘The Odyssey’ looks positioned to keep dominating daily charts for at least another week. For an original R-rated epic built around practical effects and a three-hour runtime, that kind of sustained daily pull well past opening weekend is the clearest sign yet that Nolan’s gamble on old-school, large-scale filmmaking has paid off in a major way.
