The Unofficial “Batman-Meets-Punisher” Movie Nobody Approved Has Become 2026’s Most Controversial Thriller

Nobody at DC Comics or Marvel greenlit a film that fuses Batman’s billionaire vigilantism with the Punisher’s lethal philosophy, but one has arrived anyway. ‘Citizen Vigilante’, described across multiple outlets as exactly that kind of concept made flesh, is the movie everyone is arguing about this week, and not always for the reasons its creators intended.

Directed, written, and produced by Uwe Boll, ‘Citizen Vigilante’ stars Armie Hammer as Michael Sanders, a vigilante enraged by the breakdown of law and order who decides to take justice into his own hands by killing criminals and corrupt officials. Released in select theaters and digitally on June 19, 2026, it has since become a cultural lightning rod involving government censors, a high-profile Hollywood comeback story, and Elon Musk.

The DC Cease-and-Desist That Gave This Film a New Identity

The film’s Batman DNA was never subtle, not even at the planning stage. The project was announced in January 2025 under the working title ‘The Dark Knight’, with Hammer already attached to star. Warner Bros. sent Boll a cease-and-desist letter over the use of that title, and by April 2025 the production had been renamed ‘Citizen Vigilante.’

Principal photography began on January 27, 2025, in Croatia, with Mathias Neumann serving as cinematographer, and filming wrapped on April 3, 2025. Quiver Distribution later acquired the film’s rights in February 2026, bringing it to North American theaters and digital platforms.

The official synopsis describes Sanders as a wealthy American businessman living in Zagreb who inherited a massive real estate empire, and who transforms himself into a feared underground vigilante targeting violent criminals, rapists, and corrupt officials who escaped meaningful punishment through the legal system. The premise maps the Batman archetype onto a far more bloodthirsty moral framework, with no Alfred in sight.

The tension between these two vigilante philosophies has a documented comic book history, with DC and Marvel publishing a pair of official crossover issues in 1994 pitting the two characters against each other, with the central conflict being Batman’s refusal to let the Punisher execute the Joker. ‘Citizen Vigilante’ arrives as a loose, legally untethered reimagining of that ideological debate, minus the capes and the corporate approval.

Armie Hammer’s Comeback and What It Cost Him

Just a few years ago, Armie Hammer was among Hollywood’s most promising rising stars, having earned acclaim in films including ‘The Social Network’ and ‘Call Me by Your Name.’ His career came to an abrupt halt in 2021 when allegations of physical and emotional abuse were made against him, though an investigation by the LAPD resulted in no charges being filed.

‘Citizen Vigilante’ marks Hammer’s most prominent screen return since the fallout, and at a June screening of the film he described Croatia as an extremely film-friendly environment, noting the production allowed considerable creative freedom. He also revealed he had broken his elbow skateboarding with his son shortly before filming began, but concealed the injury out of fear of losing the role.

Director Boll was candid about his motivations for casting Hammer, describing him as a great actor who had been canceled despite facing no criminal charges or lawsuits. Boll suggested Hammer had the charisma and physicality for major leading man roles, comparing his potential to that of a James Bond caliber performer.

As of this writing, the film holds a 0% critics score against a 95% audience score on the Popcornmeter, representing one of the starkest critic-audience divides of the year. Whether that split reflects genuine popular enthusiasm or a coordinated counter-reaction to critical opinion, it has kept Hammer’s name in the conversation in a way no quiet comeback vehicle could have achieved.

Why Germany Effectively Banned ‘Citizen Vigilante’

Before the film reached North American theaters, Germany’s rating agency FSK declined to grant it an age certification, effectively preventing it from screening in the country. Boll stated he was told the agency ruled by a six-to-two vote that the film was inciting violence against migrants.

The film was directly inspired by a real 2016 case in Hamburg, where a group of teenagers gang-raped a 14-year-old girl and received only suspended sentences. Boll has argued publicly that ‘Citizen Vigilante’ is a response to that failure of the justice system, though critics have challenged whether the film handles that source material with any degree of responsibility.

Writing for Variety, critic Todd Gilchrist called the film a violent, incoherent, and morally bankrupt piece of exploitation, comparing its quality to Boll’s earlier video game adaptations. Gilchrist also argued the project appeared to actively damage Hammer’s intended comeback rather than support it.

Boll responded to the German ban by hiring a lawyer to fight the certification decision, though the legal challenge was ultimately unsuccessful. The film has received almost exclusively negative critical notices, with its early Rotten Tomatoes reviews consistently landing in rotten territory and multiple reviewers placing it among the worst films of the year.

How Elon Musk and X Transformed the Film Into a Global Talking Point

On June 25, 2026, Elon Musk posted the full film to his X account, making it freely available to his 240 million followers. The link remained active for approximately 48 hours before going dark. It has been suggested that efforts to suppress or limit the film have had the opposite effect, significantly boosting its reach.

Boll framed the free release as a direct response to what he characterized as censorship in Europe, and the strategy appears to have benefited from what commentators are calling the Streisand Effect, where attempts to restrict content only serve to amplify public curiosity. A film that might have quietly faded into digital obscurity instead became a topic of conversation across entertainment, politics, and media criticism simultaneously.

Boll subsequently announced on X that ‘Citizen Vigilante 2’ is already planned for a 2027 release. Musk also publicly backed the sequel, posting that it would be even better than the first film.

Whether a follow-up can convert a divisive viral moment into anything resembling sustainable audience interest is the question hanging over the entire venture, and if you have already watched Armie Hammer channel both Bruce Wayne’s resources and Frank Castle’s ruthlessness in ‘Citizen Vigilante’, share in the comments whether you think this is the kind of role that opens doors for him again or quietly closes them for good.
