Tom Holland Reveals The One Time Filming On ‘The Odyssey’ Came to a Halt
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has been one of the most talked-about film productions in recent years. The epic fantasy project brings together a huge cast and was filmed across multiple countries with large-scale sets and practical locations.
The film adapts Homer’s ancient Greek story about Odysseus and his long journey home after the Trojan War. It stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron in key roles.
Speaking about his experience on set, Tom Holland recently reflected on the intense filming conditions and the rare moments when production had to stop. The actor described one unexpected interruption that stood out during the shoot.
According to Holland, the situation happened during a scene where his character was meant to return home and face an emotional turning point in the story. The moment was planned as a major beat in the film and involved a carefully built castle set.
He explained that the weather suddenly became too difficult to continue filming. The conditions forced the crew to pause production, even though the scene was already prepared and ready to go.
Holland said, “There was one day where it was just too much. Where my character is returning home from boy to man, he is ready to ascend the throne. And I just remember standing under an umbrella with Chris, and the most preposterous rainbow was coming out of the castle I was supposed to be going home to. And we just did have to wait for the rainbow to clear, because it was the most ridiculous thing. It looked like something out of My Little Pony.”
The actor shared that the timing of the weather made the scene almost impossible to shoot in the intended tone. The bright rainbow and shifting light created a visual that did not match the mood of the moment.
He also described how he and director Christopher Nolan waited on set while the weather passed. Even though the interruption was short, it became a memorable part of the filming process for the cast and crew.
The production of ‘The Odyssey’ has been known for its ambitious scale and practical filmmaking approach. Nolan chose real locations across multiple countries and relied heavily on natural environments to build the world of the film.
This approach also meant that the weather played a bigger role than usual during production. Large outdoor sets and natural lighting made the shoot more dependent on conditions outside of the crew’s control.
Filming for the movie took place in locations including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, and Iceland. The production also used IMAX 70mm cameras to capture the story in a highly detailed format.
With such a large-scale production, small delays like weather interruptions became part of the overall process. For the cast, these moments added to the experience of working on a physically demanding and visually driven film.
‘The Odyssey’ is set to bring Homer’s legendary story to life with a strong focus on realism and spectacle. The film follows Odysseus as he faces mythical creatures and dangerous journeys while trying to return to his wife Penelope.
Holland’s story offers a small but interesting look behind the scenes of the film and shows how even big productions can pause for something as simple as unexpected weather.
