Universal Just Beat Disney to a Massive 2026 Box Office Milestone
Universal has officially reached a major box office milestone in 2026, becoming the first Hollywood studio this year to cross $4 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
The achievement comes after Disney became the first major studio to pass the $3 billion mark worldwide at the end of June. However, Universal has now moved ahead in the yearly race, showing just how strong its lineup has been so far.
According to Deadline, Universal has earned $1.53 billion domestically and $2.48 billion internationally in 2026, bringing its total worldwide box office haul above $4 billion. This marks the fifth time in the studio’s history that Universal has reached that level and the first time it has done so since 2023.
Universal’s success has been powered by several major releases, with two of the year’s biggest billion-dollar movies coming from the studio. Out of the only three films to cross the $1 billion worldwide mark in 2026 so far, Universal is responsible for two of them: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has also played a major role in Universal’s massive year. The film is now closing in on the $1 billion mark, with its worldwide total sitting at $911 million after three weekends in theaters.
The Odyssey has continued to perform strongly even after facing competition from Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Its third global weekend brought in $136.2 million, including a huge contribution from IMAX theaters. According to Deadline, IMAX screens generated $68 million for the movie during that weekend, making it the company’s second-highest-grossing weekend ever.
The film had access to nearly all IMAX screens during the same weekend that Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened, except in China, Japan, and Korea, where Nolan’s movie had not yet been released. Those markets could provide another major boost once the film expands further.
Universal’s strong performance has not been limited to one or two movies. The studio has led the worldwide weekend box office for 10 weekends in 2026, showing consistent strength throughout the year.
Universal and Focus Features have also placed five movies among the top 10 highest-grossing films worldwide in 2026. Those titles include Michael at No. 2, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at No. 3, The Odyssey at No. 4, Obsession at No. 9, and Minions & Monsters at No. 10.
The studio’s impact is also clear when looking at the biggest films of the year. Three of the current top five highest-grossing movies worldwide in 2026 are internationally distributed by Universal, including The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael.
Another surprising success story has been Obsession. The Focus Features release has become the highest-grossing movie ever worldwide for the company, while also becoming the biggest film ever for Blumhouse Atomic Monster. The movie has earned $475 million globally, far exceeding expectations.
Universal’s strong 2026 performance puts the studio in a powerful position for the rest of the year. With major releases still ahead and several current hits continuing to grow, the studio has created one of its strongest box office runs in recent memory. While Disney may have reached the $3 billion milestone first, Universal is currently the studio setting the pace in the race toward the biggest year in Hollywood.
Which studio do you think will finish 2026 as Hollywood’s biggest box office winner?
