The latest episode of ‘The Boys’ Season 5 delivered a shocking twist with Firecracker’s unexpected demise, another brutal death caused directly by Homelander, the seemingly all-powerful supe whose grasp on reality has been steadily unraveling throughout the show’s final season.

Firecracker, whose real name is Misty Tucker Gray, has long been a character consumed by obsession and vengeance, particularly with her fixation on Homelander and her personal vendetta against Starlight. The character had positioned herself as Homelander’s most devoted follower, willing to compromise nearly every principle she ever held in pursuit of his favor.

Series creator Eric Kripke explained that Firecracker was designed as an allegory for former President Trump loyalists, modeling her character on public figures known for their unwavering political support.

Throughout the series, Firecracker has relentlessly attacked Starlight’s character on television, revealing deeply personal information including her recent abortion and helping orchestrate a campaign to defame her former childhood rival. The animosity between the two women stemmed from a childhood incident where Starlight had spread rumors about Firecracker during their pageant days, a wound that never truly healed.

In Episode 5, Firecracker’s death came after Soldier Boy relayed to Homelander a conversation in which she expressed doubts about his plan, instantly planting seeds of suspicion and sealing her fate.

The moment was particularly poignant because the episode showcased rare glimpses of redemption and hesitation within Firecracker’s character. She had been forced to sell out her own pastor on live television to maintain her position within the Seven, revealing the depths of her desperation to keep her place in Homelander’s inner circle. Even as she complied with his demands, clear internal conflict played across her face.

When confronted, Firecracker refused to leave the Seven despite Homelander’s command, unable to bear the thought of returning to her old life of hardship and poverty. Homelander showed zero empathy and brutally killed Firecracker by impaling the side of her head into the wing of an eagle statue.

Kripke noted that this punishment served as a demonstration of his central message: “It doesn’t matter how much you kiss Homelander’s a**. It doesn’t matter how much you give up. Nothing will ever be enough, and you’ll eventually get hoisted on your own petard.”

The tragedy of Firecracker’s death lies in how it mirrors a pattern viewers have witnessed throughout the superhero satire. Both A-Train and Firecracker were killed by Homelander, highlighting the harsh truth that total loyalty to him offers no protection from his growing paranoia.

As the series barrels toward its conclusion, one question looms: Will any of Homelander’s remaining inner circle finally recognize that absolute devotion leads only to betrayal and death? What are your thoughts on Firecracker’s shocking exit from the series?
