Gamora’s character arc in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie franchise has always been very interesting because she betrayed Thanos to side with the good guys before her untimely death at the hands of her adoptive father. But we also know that Gamora returned in the form of the past version of the character that lived before she even met Peter Quill and the other Guardians. As such, she was a totally different character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. So, will Gamora ever return to the Guardians of the Galaxy?

It is unlikely that Gamora will return as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. That’s because she has already found her home as a member of the Ravagers, who treat her as a family member. On top of that, Gamora was able to find her own path in life instead of conforming to the choices given to her.

Gamora’s character arc allows us to see her choosing her own path in life instead of simply following the most convenient path. As such, we now see an entirely different version of the character looking to pave her own road instead of trying to conform to what the old Gamora did when she was alive. Now, let’s consider whether or not Gamora will ever return as a Guardians of the Galaxy member.

Gamora Is Now a Ravager

In Avengers: Infinity War, we saw how Gamora lost her life when Thanos sacrificed her to obtain the Soul Stone. Of course, this had to happen when she and Peter were becoming more serious than ever regarding their relationship. They both loved one another and were willing to die for each other. As such, Gamora’s death shattered Peter emotionally.

Then again, in Avengers: Endgame, Nebula and War Machine returned to the time before Gamora met Peter and the other Guardians. Thanos followed the Avengers back to 2023, taking the past version of Gamora with him. And when Thanos and his men were killed, Gamora was spared, even though she never really joined up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In that regard, the Guardians went on with their daily lives without Gamora, who was out there somewhere in the universe. Gamora’s death and sudden return as an entirely different person who didn’t know who he was left a huge mark on Peter Quill’s life as he lost his direction. But we all know that the past version of Gamora was still alive.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 allowed us to see Gamora returning to work with the members of the Guardians. This time, however, she was now a Ravager, which was what Peter Quill was before he became a Guardian. Nebula was actually keeping in touch with Gamora the entire time and was the one that contacted her to help the Guardians out on a certain mission. As such, Gamora had to team up with Peter and the others for a price, considering she was a Ravager.

While Gamora did have a successful mission with the Guardians, she was still a Ravager. In one of the movie’s final scenes, she tells Quill that she thought running with them was quite fun. But she never decided to return with the Guardians as she now had an entirely different family.

The Ravagers that Quill lived with were a bit cruel, but the ones that Gamora now worked with actually welcomed her like a family member when she returned safely from her mission with the Guardians of the Galaxy. As such, it was clear that she found the family she never had and that the Ravagers treated her like a true family member, similar to how the Guardians treated the original version of Gamora.

Gamora Is Free to Choose Her Fate

But while Gamora’s decision to return to the Ravagers was what made it clear that she was no longer a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the most important part here is that she was now free to choose her own fate, regardless of whether it was to return to the Guardians or continue her life as a Ravager.

Why Did the Original Guardians of the Galaxy Disband?

In the past, Gamora had no choice in how to live her life because Thanos took her in as a child and raised her as his adoptive daughter. After the original Gamora defected from Thanos, she immediately worked with the Guardians of the Galaxy to protect the people from the likes of Thanos. In a sense, she lived her life according to the choices that were available to her.

However, the new version of Gamora now had a choice to make. She wasn’t the old Gamora, who Peter was still in love with. The fact that Peter often talked about the old Gamora was one of the reasons why he and the new Gamora didn’t see eye-to-eye a lot of times, as it was as though Quill was imposing his own version of Gamora on the new one.

The new Gamora was not about to conform to Peter’s own version of Gamora as she was her own person. She may be similar to the old Gamora regarding appearance, genetics, and early history. But she was an entirely different person who had to follow a path different than the old Gamora followed because the new one finally had the opportunity to make her own choices in life.

As such, it all boils down to her choice here because Gamora chose to be a Ravager instead of trying to conform to Peter’s version of Gamora. She was free and didn’t have to fall in love with Quill just because the original Gamora fell for him. Gamora also didn’t have to be a Guardian just because the original one was a founding member of the team. And that’s why her choice to return to the Ravagers was powerful, as she can now grow as her own person with her own free choices in life.
