In most cases, MCU films have two post-credits scenes. The first one is the mid-credits scene, which shows up after the mid-credits. In most cases, the mid-credits scenes are the most important post-credits scenes because they are the ones that directly affect the future of the movie franchise. Meanwhile, post-credits are often extra scenes that add color or comedy to the movie.

That said, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does have two post-credits scenes that follow the usual MCU format. As such, it has one mid-credits scene that sets up the future of the Guardians franchise. Meanwhile, the second post-credits scene, which is the true one, is simply an extra scene that can be quite heartwarming.

What Happens in the Mid-Credits Scene?

After the Guardians defeated the High Evolutionary and saved many people and animals on their enemy’s ship, they talked about the group’s future and what they wanted to do next. Peter Quill was the first one to tell the group that he would leave to return to Earth so that he didn’t have to run away from his past anymore. He was talking about his grandfather, whom he had never visited since Yondu abducted him decades ago.

Meanwhile, Mantis decided to follow her own path in life because she felt that she never had a chance to make her own choices in life after spending most of her life with Ego and simply following the flow of the river when she joined the Guardians. She wanted to go around the universe to meet new people and explore different places while following her own path in life.

Nebula opted to stay with the Guardians of the Galaxy but told the group that she would focus more on building a home for the people and animals they saved. She also told Drax that she needed his help because he was a father figure that the rescued children admired.

That was when they all decided to give the captain mantle to Rocket, who had finally faced his past and was now a better person and leader than before. Of course, Groot and the other remaining Guardians would now have to look up to him as their new leader.

In the mid-credits scene, we see Rocket meeting up with the next generation of the Guardians of the Galaxy while tinkering with the Zune that Peter Quill left behind. He asked the younger Guardians what their favorite songs were, and that was when it was revealed that he was now leading a new group of Guardians composed of Kraglin, Cosmo the Dog, Phyla-Kell (one of the orphaned girls), and Adam Warlock. As their enemies were on their way to attack them, Rocket woke up Groot, a gigantic rock-like tree that had become even more massive than the original version of Groot.

As such, the mid-credits scene allowed us to see what was next for the Guardians and the new members of this group. Rocket is now the leader and is looking to lead newer faces looking to help people in the galaxy. And we may see Rocket’s next-gen Guardians in future MCU movies.

What Happens in the Second Post-Credits Scene?

Meanwhile, the second post-credits scene isn’t as important as the mid-credits scene but is heartwarming regarding what it means for Peter Quill and his future as a character. We know that he decided to return to Earth to spend time with his grandfather instead of going with the flow as a member of the Guardians. The film’s conclusion even allowed us to see him finally reuniting with his grandfather after decades of not seeing one another.

The second post-credits scene allowed us to see Peter and his grandpa eating breakfast while discussing what Quill has to do in his life now that he is living the life of a normie and is no longer a hero saving the universe from different threats. He and his grandpa discussed the prospect of him mowing their neighbors’ lawns so that he could make a living while on Earth.

Of course, this is now a far cry from the life of adventure that Peter used to live, but this was a welcome break that he needed after losing a lot of people and going through several traumatic experiences in his life. This downtime could be what he needs to restart his life. And the scene ended with a message on the screen saying that Star-Lord will return.
