Will ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ Finally Collide in the ‘Yellowstone’ Universe?
Fans have wanted a ‘Marshals‘ and ‘Dutton Ranch‘ crossover since both shows were announced. The two spinoffs have existed side by side for a while now, yet the wish has gone ungranted, even though it sounds like a matter of when rather than if. The pairing makes sense on paper, given that the surviving Duttons are split between two very different shows.
Right now the two series are linked only by their shared roots as sequels to ‘Yellowstone’. That may be changing, because the first seasons of both shows closed on strikingly similar cliffhangers. Here is where the ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ connection stands, and what could bring the two together.
How the ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ Connection Started
‘Marshals’ picks up the story of Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, after his decision to sell the family’s Montana ranch in the ‘Yellowstone’ finale. He returns to his soldierly ways by joining a team of U.S. Marshals who solve cases in the area. It is a procedural that airs on CBS.
‘Dutton Ranch’ goes in a very different direction. It follows Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler as they relocate to the small Southern Texas town of Rio Paloma. It plays more like a traditional serialized drama in the vein of ‘Yellowstone’.
The shows do share a few threads. Beth and Rip have both been mentioned in ‘Marshals’, and John Dutton has come up in several episodes. Beth and Rip, however, never bring up Kayce after their Montana home burns down.
Kidnapped Sons Fuel the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Crossover
The strongest link between the two shows may be an accident of timing. Both first seasons ended with the kidnapping of a main character’s son, and both boys may now be in Texas. That alone has the fanbase connecting the dots.
‘Marshals’ ended on May 24 with Tate taken by the new villain Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey. ‘Dutton Ranch’ wrapped on July 3 with Carter, played by Finn Little, kidnapped by the cartel. Tom claimed he was heading to Texas, though that could have been a lie.
In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Reilly and Hauser were asked whether the matching endings were planned. Reilly smiled and teased “Maybe” before leaving it at that. It is not a confirmation, but it is hardly a denial either.
Why Kayce and Beth Dutton Need Each Other
The emotional case for a crossover is easy to make. Grimes has said he and Reilly still text about a crossover, calling it necessary for both characters. Apart from Tate, they are the last of the Dutton bloodline and need to lean on each other.
Reilly has been just as open about it. She told People that she hopes to work with Grimes again, and she said “I wish we had a crossover.” Grimes has also said there is probably a good chance fans will see more ‘Yellowstone’ stars on ‘Marshals’.
There is unfinished business as well. Reilly and Hauser said that not acknowledging the death of Monica in ‘Dutton Ranch’ was a missed opportunity they want to correct in the next season. A reunion would give Beth a chance to face that loss with the brother who lived it.
What Stands in the Way of a Season 2 Crossover
If everyone wants it, why hasn’t it happened? The one word standing in the way, according to the showrunner, is logistics. ‘Marshals’ follows the traditional broadcast calendar, while ‘Dutton Ranch’ is a streaming show that releases seasons whenever scheduling allows.
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut appears to have written the ‘Marshals’ finale to set up a trip to Texas, yet the second season could not deliver the crossover because of those scheduling hurdles. That is a letdown for fans hoping to see Kayce and Beth in the same frame. It also suggests the idea is still alive rather than dead.
There is a consolation prize. Jefferson White is confirmed to appear in ‘Marshals’ as Jimmy, the former ranch hand who left for Texas to work on the Four Sixes. The second season of ‘Marshals’ is set to premiere on CBS in fall 2026, while ‘Dutton Ranch’ has no second season date yet.
Not everyone is convinced the pairing would work. One critic argued that ‘Marshals’ is not very good and that ‘Dutton Ranch’ feels much closer to the spirit of Taylor Sheridan’s original series. If Beth and Kayce do end up chasing Tate and Carter across Texas together, would you rather see her bring Rip along or let the Dutton siblings handle it alone?
