‘X-Men ’97’ Just Confirmed Its Future, And It’s Bigger Than Anyone Expected
The future of ‘X-Men 97’ is officially looking brighter than ever, with Marvel Animation confirming that the beloved revival series has plenty more story left to tell beyond its already announced second and third seasons.
The news comes straight from the Tribeca Festival, where Marvel Studios Head of TV and Streaming Brad Winderbaum joined executive producers Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, and Larry Houston for the highly anticipated ‘X-Men 97’ Season 2 world premiere.
The official world premiere took place in New York on June 13, with Marvel Animation yet to assign the season an exact spot on the Disney Plus release calendar, though its Tribeca debut suggests a worldwide premiere will follow shortly after. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on July 1, 2026, on Disney Plus and will consist of nine episodes.
Bringing the original creative team back into the fold has clearly energized the project. Eric Lewald, Julia Lewald, and Larry Houston served as consulting producers on Season 1, but have stepped up to full executive producer roles for Season 2, helping guide the team with their decades of experience on the original ‘X-Men’ animated series.
Plot specifics for the new season remain tightly guarded, but the Season 1 finale left plenty to chew on. With Apocalypse now in the picture and the X-Men scattered across space and time, their only hope of stopping the gravest threat they have ever faced is finding a way to reunite. According to the producers, Gambit’s death hangs heavily over the new episodes, with Rogue still grieving the loss of her teammate, and the Apocalypse tease may point toward Gambit’s dark comic book path.

What has fans especially excited is that ‘X-Men 97’ isn’t just looking at a third season and stopping there. Winderbaum has confirmed that a third season is already locked in, with Rogue actor Lenore Zann even confirming she has begun recording voice lines.
Speaking to Collider’s Maggie Lovitt at New York Comic Con, Winderbaum stated there is definitely, more than possibly, more to come from ‘X-Men 97,’ revealing that Seasons 4 and 5 are now actively being discussed.
The momentum behind the franchise seems to be building quickly. Winderbaum also revealed that he has nearly seen animatics for the entirety of Season 3 already, calling what he has seen incredible. With the original series running for five seasons in the 1990s before ‘X-Men 97’ picked up the story in 2024, a potential five season run for the revival would mirror that legacy in a fitting way for longtime fans.
