The romantic black comedy The Drama is officially heading to streaming, giving viewers another chance to see the unusual story that helped turn the film into a box office success.

According to HBO Max, the movie will make its exclusive streaming debut in the United States on July 31. The film will also air on HBO’s linear channel on August 1 at 8 p.m. ET. The announcement arrives several months after the movie’s theatrical run, which attracted strong attention thanks to its star-studded cast and unconventional story.

Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, The Drama follows an engaged couple whose relationship is suddenly shaken by an unexpected revelation just days before their wedding. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson lead the cast as the couple at the center of the story, while Alana Haim, Mamoudou Athie, and Hailey Benton Gates appear in supporting roles.

When the movie first arrived in theaters in April, many viewers were curious about how Borgli would handle a story that mixed romance, dark comedy, and psychological tension. The result was a film that sparked conversation among both critics and audiences.

The movie premiered in Los Angeles on March 17 before receiving its wider theatrical release from A24 on April 3. While its premise appeared simple on the surface, the film quickly developed a reputation for taking audiences in unexpected directions.

Deadline film critic Pete Hammond praised the project in his review. In his review for Deadline, he described The Drama as a “brilliantly constructed and fascinating journey.” He also highlighted the movie’s ability to keep audiences guessing as the story unfolds.

The film proved to be a strong performer financially as well. Produced on a reported budget of $28 million, The Drama earned more than $132 million worldwide during its theatrical run. That made it one of A24’s most successful releases of the year and demonstrated the continued drawing power of both Zendaya and Pattinson.

Critical reception was largely positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 76 percent approval rating from critics. The site’s consensus praises the performances of the two leads and notes how successfully the film balances its shifting tones. Many reviews pointed to the chemistry between Zendaya and Pattinson as one of the movie’s biggest strengths.

For Zendaya, the film added another acclaimed performance to an already impressive run of projects across both film and television. Pattinson also received praise for his role, with several critics highlighting his ability to move between comedy, drama, and darker material throughout the story.

The streaming release is expected to introduce the movie to an even larger audience. Many films have found a second life after arriving on streaming platforms, especially titles that generated strong word of mouth during their theatrical runs. Given the attention The Drama received in cinemas, HBO Max could see significant interest when the film becomes available at the end of July.

With positive reviews, strong box office numbers, and two major stars leading the cast, The Drama has already established itself as one of the standout releases of the year. Now viewers who have been waiting to watch it from home will finally get their chance when it arrives on HBO Max later this month.
