Netflix is bringing one of the world’s most popular board games to the screen. The streaming platform has secured exclusive global rights to Catan, the strategy game created by Klaus Teuber, according to French game publisher Asmodee.

The new deal will see Netflix develop live-action and animated projects based on the game, expanding its growing list of game-to-screen adaptations.

Catan, which first came out in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan, takes place on an island where players build settlements, trade resources, and compete for control while facing unpredictable challenges. This new partnership marks the first time the island of Catan will be brought to life through film and television.

Asmodee and Netflix plan to explore the game’s world through a mix of films, TV shows, and even unscripted formats.

The projects will be produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber. Producer Roy Lee, known for his work with Vertigo Entertainment, is also part of the team.

Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, said he’s excited to see the game reach a bigger audience. “Millions of people are enjoying Catan since it was created and for many, it remains a gateway to modern board gaming. I am thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe,” Koegler said.

“It’s also a testament that board gaming is truly part of pop culture and a popular form of entertainment in everyone’s homes.”

Jinny Howe, who leads Netflix’s U.S. and Canada scripted series, said the game’s competitive nature makes it perfect for storytelling. “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” she said.

“We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”

The deal is part of an ongoing collaboration between Asmodee and Netflix. The two companies recently worked together on Family Pack, a French film inspired by the card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow. Asmodee has also produced board games based on several Netflix favorites, including Ozark, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Bridgerton.

Benjamin and Guido Teuber, now co-CEOs of Catan GmbH, said this project continues their father’s vision. “When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan thirty years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together — both at the table and beyond it,” they said.

“This collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in that journey. For three decades, Catan has connected families and friends around the world. Now, we’re thrilled to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage — staying true to our father’s vision of creativity, strategy and human connection.”

Netflix has been steadily growing its library of adaptations from games and tabletop franchises. The streamer’s past and upcoming projects include Arcane, Castlevania, Assassin’s Creed, Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Clue, Monopoly, and Gears of War.
